To be eligible for a supplement for Head Coach, individuals are expected to meet the following qualifications and responsibilities.

• Instructs athletes in fundamental skills, training, and strategies necessary to achieve success
• Provides instruction and guidance that will lead to positive values, acceptable behavior, and self-discipline
• Exhibits responsible conduct both in and out of the competitive arena
• Maintains a copy of student records for sports such as physicals, insurance forms, concussion information receipt letters, and parent consent forms with the contracted athletic trainer
• Promotes professional growth by encouraging coaching staff attendance at clinics and conferences
• Assigns coaching staff specific duties, supervises these assignments, and completes evaluations of assistant coaches at the end of the season
• Responsible for consistent positive information to the media, booster clubs, parents, and officials
• Completes the State required concussion course prior to the start of the first practice and ensures all coaching staff members have completed the course
• Promotes wholesome sportsmanship among parents, players, and fans
• Responsible for all equipment collections
• Monitors athletic locker rooms before and after practice and competitions
• Secures all doors and windows before leaving athletic facilities
• Develops in each athlete a respect for school property
• Attends annual VHSL coaching and official’s clinics when necessary
• Works with the athletic director to ensure that each student-athlete progresses in all academic areas
• Organizes meetings with parents and the community before sport season begins
• Contacts colleges and universities on behalf of athletes and provides candid appraisals of athletic and academic potential
• Uses sound, acceptable coaching/teaching techniques
• Runs well-organized practice sessions
• Completes pre-season planning well in advance of the starting date
• Adheres to efficient and technically sound programs of injury prevention
• Constructs a well-organized game plan
• Develops a system for equipment accountability
• Keeps assistant coaches, student managers, and statisticians well informed about expectations
• Cooperates with maintenance and transportation staff and others involved in the athletics program
• Ensures athletes have transportation after games and practices, particularly away games
• Provides for the safety of athletes, teaches skills necessary for competition, monitors adherence to school and athletic rules, and oversees student conduct at practices and competitions
• Keeps practice periods within the time specified by the athletic director and informs the director of practice schedules during holidays
• Meets with the administrator at the end of the season to evaluate the program and make recommendations for improvement
• Supports endorsed activities of the school; models polite, courteous, and fair behavior toward visiting teams
• Supervises all students in their charge at all times and places and before and after activities of practices
