Summary StatementSeasonal position with Delaware's Species Conservation and Research Program to assist the Delaware Shorebird Project, a decades-long effort to study long distance migrating shorebirds as they make their annual stop in the Delaware Bay. Primary responsibilities of the position will be to recruit, schedule, train, and manage volunteers of varying experience levels to collect migratory shorebird data during the May field season, as well as also participating extensively in that field work, such as walking and boat surveys, flag resighting, and large cannon-net captures for banding, tagging, and satellite tag deployment.
Duties outside the May field season include data entry and management, assisting with other wildlife projects including colonial waterbird surveys and American oyster catcher capture and banding, and preparing reports and outreach materials for volunteers and the general public using GIS, Excel, RStudio, and Access.
Applicants must be available for irregular work hours during the peak field season from May 1-June 3, including willingness to work on holidays, weekends, and outside of typical work hours, though a maximum five-day work week would be maintained, likely Sunday through Thursday. Willingness to work long hours with paid overtime within that five-day work week is required. On-site housing and communal meals with the shorebird volunteer team in Slaughter Beach, DE would be provided through the work week during this period, though biological aides are not required to stay on site.
Housing is only available during the field season, and work schedule returns to a standard Monday to Friday work after the first week of June, though start times and day lengths vary throughout the summer. Good candidates should have experience relevant to some or all of the listed field skills and particularly those relating to team management and scheduling.
