Introduction

The Division of Fish & Wildlife conserves and manages Delaware’s fish and wildlife and their habitats, and provides fishing, hunting, wildlife viewing and boating access on nearly 65,000 acres of public land.  for more information about the Fish and Wildlife Division.

Summary Statement

These two positions are seasonal research assistants with Delaware's Species Conservation and Research Program. They will assist the State Herpetologist with various amphibian and reptile projects. The job responsibilities include conducting surveys for amphibians and reptiles; conducting radio telemetry and trapping; monitoring rare, threatened, and endangered species; identifying, measuring, and marking live animals; and entering field data into Excel and Google Earth databases.

Positions will also assist with other wildlife research projects. Applicants must be available to work weekends, evenings, and holidays as scheduled.

Essential Functions
  • Conducts fieldwork to collect samples and survey data independently, but under the guidance of a technical superior.
  • Processes biological samples.
  • Utilizes and maintains various scientific instruments, boats, and all‑terrain vehicles.
  • Provides field (e.g., controlled sampling) and/or laboratory support to professional staff involved in research or program development for managing the quality of natural resources.
  • Must be able to demonstrate responsibility, dependability, professionalism and good communication skills, and interact as a team member with other staff and volunteers.
  • Maintains a positive attitude.
  • Other duties as required.
Job Requirements
  • Must be at least 18 years of age.
  • Six months experience in conducting field work to collect samples and survey data.
  • Knowledge of using a Geographic Information System (GIS).
  • Knowledge of narrative report writing.
  • Knowledge of wildlife biology/management or a closely related field.
  • Possession of a valid Driver's License (not suspended, revoked or cancelled, or disqualified from driving).

    This posting may be closed on or before the posted closing date upon filling the vacant position(s). This is a Casual/Seasonal position which is a non‑pension eligible position without healthcare and/or other benefits.

    Criminal background check: A satisfactory criminal background check is required as a condition of hire. The recruiting agency may require the applicant to pay for the criminal background check as part of the conditional offer of hire.

    All new hires are required to report to the Statewide New Employee Orientation (SNEO) on their first day of employment. Sessions are held at designated locations in Kent or New Castle County.
