IntroductionDelaware’s Division of Fish and Wildlife (DFW) manages and conserves the quality and diversity of Delaware’s wildlife and publicly owned wildlife habitat. The DFW waterfowl and migratory gamebird program oversees the ducks, geese, swans, doves, and other migratory gamebirds of Delaware, monitoring harvest, collecting biological data, and collaborating on annual banding and telemetry research. It represents Delaware’s wildlife interests in science‑based forums with neighboring states through the Atlantic Flyway Council Technical Section.
SummaryStatement
This seasonal research assistant position will assist the State Waterfowl and Migratory Gamebird Biologist with waterfowl and migratory gamebird projects while directing fieldwork activities of the program‑associated Bio Aide III and volunteers. The position is year‑round, no housing is provided, and responsibilities include conducting surveys for gamebirds, capturing, banding, identifying, and marking live animals, entering data into Excel and Access databases, and coordinating with Atlantic Flyway Council Technical Section members and partnered staff on collaborative research projects.
Additional projects such as deer, turkey, and non‑game birds may also be required occasionally.
- Provides technical support in studies, surveys, inspections, and research projects.
- Collects field samples and data.
- Provides technical information and assistance to the public and the regulated community.
- Interprets rules and regulations for assigned area.
- Reviews permit applications and supplemental paperwork for approval or recommendation for disapproval.
- Operates and maintains vehicles, boats, and sampling equipment.
- Maintains accurate records and prepares reports.
- May assist in processing biological samples.
- Six months experience in conducting field work to collect environmental or ecological samples and survey data.
- Six months experience in analyzing and evaluating data.
- Six months experience in math such as addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, percentages, or decimals.
- Six months experience in interpreting laws, rules, regulations, standards, policies, and procedures.
- Six months experience in narrative report writing.
- Six months experience in using an automated information system to enter, update, modify, delete, retrieve/inquire and report on data.
- Possession of a valid Driver's License (not suspended, revoked or cancelled, or disqualified from driving).
