CompensationPay begins at $48,799.25 yearly salary for Probation Officer, dependent on experience. In addition to the base salary, this full‑time position is eligible for an annual performance bonus and a longevity bonus.

The purpose of this classification is to perform probation work involving supervising activities of offenders placed on probation by the courts. The probation officer supervises offenders and interacts with courts and judicial officials on a regular basis.
Duties and responsibilities include attending court sessions, determining level of supervision necessary for individual probationers, providing limited counseling, referring clients to probation assistance programs, and conferring with law enforcement and court personnel in matters pertaining to violation of probation by clients. The probation officer maintains and submits data for monthly and quarterly reports and performs other tasks as assigned. Reports to Chief Probation Officer.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities- Meet with probationers in office according to established schedules, or more often as necessary, advise clients of provisions of probation agreements, ensure adherence to agreements, provide limited counseling, and refer clients to community‑based probation assistance programs, as necessary.
- Enforce rules, regulations, policies, and procedures; maintain a secure and peaceful environment in the building.
- Maintain logs, records, and reports of all contacts with clients and complete Probation Orders, Expiration of Probation Orders, and Probation Violations.
- Attend court hearings to provide testimony regarding offenders, make recommendations regarding their status, and acquire additional offenders as assigned by the Judge.
- Confere with district attorney's office, judges and/or law enforcement personnel about clients' violations of probation terms or other need to amend probation status, and amend probationers' files accordingly; testify in court as to probationers' status and adherence to reporting schedules and other terms of probation, as appropriate.
- Ensure proper maintenance and update of all offenders' files and audit them to ensure compliance with existing regulations and standards.
- Obtain urine samples from probationers for drug‑use analysis.
- Make recommendations regarding the level of supervision, changes in status, and revocation of offenders in their caseload.
- Maintain effective working relationships with local judges, judicial officials, attorneys, local law enforcement agencies, and service providers.
- Oversee the tabulation of fees from offenders and ensure that the funds are properly deposited and accounted for.
- Interact with family members of offenders to obtain information, explain legal actions, status of offenders, and progress.
- Meet all established deadlines and perform all job‑related duties in a timely manner.
- Operate a computer to enter, retrieve, review or modify data; verify accuracy of entered data and make corrections; utilize word processing, database, or other software programs.
- Follow safety procedures, utilize safety equipment, and monitor work environment to ensure safety of employees, clients, visitors, and other individuals.
- Communicate effectively with supervisor, employees, other departments, law enforcement personnel, court personnel, attorneys, visitors, the public, outside agencies, and other individuals as needed to coordinate work activities, review status of work, exchange information, or resolve problems.
- Perform other duties as assigned by supervisor or Town Manager.
- Must possess and maintain a valid Tennessee Driver's license.
- Must have one of the following:
- Bachelor's degree in criminal justice, psychology, social work, human services, or related work from an appropriately accredited institution.
- 2 years of experience as a Tennessee Probation/Parole Officer; law enforcement, criminal court, legal system, or related field is preferred.
- Any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this job.
