PAY & BENEFITS

Pay begins at $52,881.38 annually and is dependent upon applicable experience. In addition to the base salary, this full‑time position is eligible for an annual performance bonus as well as a longevity bonus. There are 2 vacancies available.

DESCRIPTION

Under general supervision, the Utility Locator is responsible for accurately locating and marking underground utility lines (water, sewer, gas) to prevent damage during excavation activities. This position plays a critical role in ensuring the safety of workers and the public, protecting valuable infrastructure, and maintaining compliance with state and federal regulations. Under general supervision, this position is accountable to the Gas & W/S Supervisors.

  • Respond to and prioritize locate requests received through the 811 system (or other internal/external sources) within prescribed time frames in accordance with Tennessee One Call regulations.
  • Interpret and understand utility maps, blueprints, as‑built drawings, and other technical documents to identify the approximate location of underground utilities.
  • Utilize various electronic locating equipment (e.g., electromagnetic pipe and cable locators, ground penetrating radar (GPR), GPS, sondes) to pinpoint the precise horizontal alignment of buried lines.
  • Accurately mark the located utilities on the ground using spray paint or flags according to Tennessee One Call established color codes.
  • Document all locate activities thoroughly, including date, time, requester information, utility type, depths, marking methods, and any challenging conditions encountered. Maintain accurate records and submit reports as required.
  • Communicate effectively with excavators, contractors, property owners, and other utility companies to clarify locate requests and provide information regarding utility locations.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve complex locating challenges, including crowded utility corridors, unknown utilities, or poor signal conditions.
  • Perform routine maintenance and calibration of locating equipment to ensure accuracy and functionality. Report any malfunctioning equipment to appropriate supervisor.
  • Maintain knowledge and adhere to all safety policies and procedures, including wearing appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) at all times, practicing safe driving habits, and maintaining a safe work environment.
  • Participate in training programs to stay current with new locating technologies, equipment, and regulations.
  • Maintain on‑call rotation status for after‑hours work, as required by management.
  • Conduct behavior in a professional manner at all times to positively reflect on customer’s perception of the Town.
  • Assist in maintaining the cleanliness of facilities. Report incidents to the appropriate supervisor.
  • Perform and assist with duties and responsibilities of assigned personnel, as necessary.
  • Coordinate with GIS in mapping gas, water and wastewater utilities.
  • Other duties as assigned by management.
  • May be required to work extended hours, including evenings, weekends, and holidays, and be on‑call for emergency locates.
  • Must be at least 18 years of age.
  • Must have High School diploma or GED.
  • Must have a valid Tennessee Driver’s License.
  • Minimum five (5) years’ experience locating various types of utility infrastructure (water, sewer and gas).
  • Must have knowledge of current 811 laws and regulations, utility locating principles, techniques and best practices.
