Objective SummaryResponsible for providing comprehensive skilled pediatric Occupational Therapy evaluation and treatment of infants, children, and adolescents in an outpatient setting, consistent with AOTA, State, District, and departmental standards.
Essential Functions- Assess the patient’s Occupational Therapy needs.
- Activities of Daily Living (ADLs) and participation skills including feeding, dressing, grooming, toileting, play skills, school‑related tasks, and age‑appropriate self‑care routines.
- Perceptual and sensory processing skills including visual‑perceptual skills, eye‑hand coordination, position in space, sensory modulation and integration (touch/sensation, proprioception, vestibular processing), stereognosis, tactile discrimination, body awareness, body image, left/right discrimination, and visual attention impacting fine and gross motor performance.
- Physical and motor skills including range of motion, muscle strength, postural control, balance, bilateral coordination, fine motor skills, grasp and release, in‑hand manipulation, handwriting readiness, and functional mobility as it relates to age‑appropriate play, school participation, and self‑care.
- Cognitive, developmental, and executive functioning abilities including attention, concentration, problem‑solving, planning, sequencing, emotional regulation, and ability to follow directions within structured and unstructured environments.
- Assess need for adaptive equipment, assistive devices, and environmental modifications in the home, school, and community settings to support participation, safety, and independence.
- Assess need for corrective and/or preventative splinting, positioning devices, and orthotic interventions appropriate for pediatric populations.
- Evaluate the pediatric patient’s condition, developmental level, family dynamics, caregiver support, and home/school environment to determine available assistance and identify additional services or community resources needed to support the child’s functional outcomes.
- Develop an individualized therapy plan:
- Utilize assessment data to develop a pediatric plan of care using a problem‑oriented record format; develop a written family education and home program plan, including goals, objectives, and methods of teaching, adjusted to the child’s developmental level and family’s learning needs.
- Interpret Rehabilitation Department/Occupational Therapy services as the child and family are actively involved in development of the plan of care.
- Consult with appropriate disciplines (e.g., physical therapy, speech therapy, physicians, educators, social work) and incorporate interdisciplinary input to develop and implement the plan of care.
- Additional responsibilities:
- Consult the physician and obtain consent to proceed with the assessed pediatric treatment plan.
- Assure implementation of the therapy plan:
- Provide skilled pediatric Occupational Therapy services at the frequency required to meet established goals, as follows:
- Provide OT services and treatment requiring specialized pediatric skill and ordered by the physician.
- Instruct and educate caregivers, family members, and staff in therapeutic activities, positioning, sensory strategies, adaptive equipment use, and carry‑over techniques.
