Overview

Probation officers provide casework services to probationers under the direction of the Superior Court, performing duties consistent with Arizona legal standards and the Arizona Code of Judicial Administration. The position includes supervising assigned probationers, conducting searches, making arrests, and appearing in court.

Essential Job Functions
  • Supervise and observe probationers to ensure compliance with court‑ordered conditions.
  • Direct and counsel probationers and parents/guardians, especially when supervising juveniles.
  • Conduct field contacts at homes, workplaces, treatment facilities, schools, community restitution sites, and detention facilities.
  • Collect, secure, and maintain complete identification records, including arrest reports and compliance notes, and prepare written court reports.
  • Build relationships to encourage compliance with the case plan through frequent telephone, site, and home contacts.
  • Direct or refer probationers and guardians to community resources, treatments, or other interventions based on assessment.
  • Participate in case review conferences to determine changes in supervision level.
  • Perform searches, breathing/urinalysis tests, and locate absconding probationers.
  • Serve warrants, make arrests, and bring persons before the court, including those facing revocation.
  • Appear and testify in court sessions.
  • Monitor restitution and probation fee payments, ensuring victim notification rights are provided.
  • Use defensive tactics and techniques, as trained, for personal and public safety.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
  • Proficiency in operating motor vehicles, computers, radios, handcuffs, and body armor.
  • Independent mobility: able to stand, walk, bend, and reach as required by the job.
  • Ability to apply defensive tactics and perform proficiency testing as a peace officer.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills for reporting and courtroom testimony.
  • Capacity to manage high‑risk incumbents, including felons and individuals with domestic violence convictions, while maintaining personal safety.
