JOB TITLE:

JOB SUMMARY:Conducts waived chemical and physical laboratory tests of blood and body fluids and draws blood samples for test analysis.
Performs clerical duties as assigned.
OSHA Bloodborne Pathogens Class I.
JOB QUALIFICATIONS:

Education:
High School graduate or equivalent.
B.Personal
Job-Related Skills:
Ability to collect and process body fluid specimens in a safe and expedient manner.
Knowledge of medical terminology required.
Understanding of basic laboratory functions.
Working knowledge of the Hospital Information and Laboratory Information Systems.
Familiarity with lab values and clinical criteria.
C.Licensure, Registry or Certification:
Certification in phlebotomy preferred.

Experience:
1.Prior
Work Experience:
Two years experience in a hospital clinical laboratory setting as a phlebotomist preferred.

E.Physical and Mental Requirements:
Duties of the position require moderate periods of sitting and long periods of standing, lifting up to 30 pounds.
Must be able to hear equipment alarms and have vision to read labeling, instructions, and to conduct tests.
The ability to comprehend and follow written and verbal instructions.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
A. Conducts laboratory tests utilizing laboratory equipment.
1.Sets up laboratory equipment and instrumentation required for tests.
2.Tests and analyzes blood and body fluids using waived testing techniques.
3.Documents results of tests and analyses.
4.Prepares control material and reagents for use in processing test analysis.
5.Conducts routine preventative maintenance on equipment in accordance with manufacturer and accrediting agencies’ guidelines and standards.
B.Performs phlebotomist duties.
1.Performs phlebotomy functions on patients in a professional manner.
2.Draws and processes specimens in compliance with established procedures.
3.Identifies and labels specimens.

C. Performs clerical and computer duties.
1.Logs specimen receiving times into the laboratory computer system.
2.Places orders in the laboratory computer system as received on paper from Nursing Service when the HIS is down or the trauma identification system is in use.
3.Maintains records in a neat and orderly fashion.
OTHER SIGNIFICANT REQUIREMENTS:
A.Maintains HIPAA required and all other confidentiality while working with confidential matters on a daily basis.
B.Provides service direct to patients while maintaining a positive patient relations atmosphere.
C.Follows procedures for using precautions when involved in direct patient contact or when handling potentially infectious materials.
D.Follows safety guidelines and policies for the Hospital.
