This position, under the general supervision of the Chief of Police or their designee, performs general police duties and is responsible for the enforcement of federal, state, and local laws and the protection of life and property. Police officers interact with the general public regularly to provide educational, investigative, and related police services with the goal of preventing crime, ensuring public safety, and developing positive police-citizen relationships.

Responsibilities include:

Enforcing federal, state, and local laws and ordinances.

Patrolling the city on foot or in a vehicle to respond to citizen requests, enforce traffic laws, detect and apprehend offenders, and ensure public safety.

Responding to dispatched or citizen requests for police services and assistance at accident scenes, domestic disputes, disturbances, and other incidents.

Investigating illegal or suspicious activities, persons, and establishments, and quelling disturbances.

Locating, searching, detaining, and arresting law violators following police procedures.

Interviewing victims, witnesses, and suspects.

Gathering and preserving evidence.

Providing first aid and other assistance to accident and crime victims.

Directing traffic and investigating causes of accidents.

Issuing citations for traffic and minor violations.

Inspecting public establishments for compliance with licensing rules.

Operating police communication and computer equipment to report and disseminate information.

Building positive relationships with the community, organizations, and other law enforcement agencies.

Participating in community meetings and crime prevention activities.

Engaging in continuous training to stay current with law enforcement practices and improve skills.

Writing detailed reports and maintaining confidentiality.

Testifying in court and responding to subpoenas.

Upholding the integrity and professionalism of the Police Department.

Responding promptly to requests from colleagues and other agencies.

Additional duties such as serving as a police instructor, field training officer, or school resource officer.

Minimum qualifications:

Ability to exercise independent judgment in law enforcement duties.
Legal ability to enforce laws within the jurisdiction.
Effective communication skills, both oral and written.
Knowledge of department policies and procedures.
Ability to work with other agencies and the public.
High school diploma or GED; minimum age 21.
Valid, unrestricted Alaska driver’s license within 30 days of employment.
Good driving record.
Ability to pass various screenings and tests, including drug, medical, polygraph, psychological, physical fitness, and background checks.
Must meet all requirements under Alaska Administrative Code (13 AAC 85) and obtain/maintain police certification.
Obtain and maintain ASPIN security clearance.
Preferred:
Degree in criminal justice or related field, or prior law enforcement experience.

Work environment:

Must be able to work non-traditional hours, including nights, weekends, and holidays. The environment may involve exposure to dangerous situations, chemicals, biological hazards, and extreme weather. Physical exertion, including lifting over 100 pounds, is required. The role involves working indoors and outdoors, sometimes in stressful situations, and operating vehicles and equipment.
