Solon City Schools Parent Mentor Qualifications
- Is a parent of a child with a disability;
- Is employed at a minimum of 0.5 full-time equivalency (FTE);
Grant funded. - Is a member of the community or has knowledge of the community served by the project;
- Has experience with leadership in the parent community;
- Has experience in and maintains knowledge of special education systems and processes;
- Demonstrates excellent verbal and written communication skills; and
- Knows about support systems in the community.
Contract Work Days: 185 days
Responsible to:
Director of Pupil Personnel
- Serves as a trusted guide, helping families navigate special education systems, understand their rights, and actively participate in their child’s education.
- Explains the Individual Education Plan (IEP)/504 process and can attend team meetings, if requested.
- Serves as a liaison between families and the school district to promote effective communication and collaboration.
- Helps families navigate services and resources within school districts and communities, particularly for children with disabilities and those in the pre-referral and referral process.
- Fosters partnerships and alliances that positively impact student outcomes.
- Provides confidential support for concerns and questions.
- Provides a lending library of materials to assist parents/guardians and professionals.
- Works cooperatively with Solon's Organized Parent Education Network (OPEN) to provide presentations, parent workshops and parent networking meetings.
- Publishes information in PTA newsletters highlighting special education topics as well as on the OPEN Facebook page. Attend PTA meetings as available to promote awareness of role.
- Collect and report data, participate in professional development and comply with district and grant-funding guidelines.
- May involve travel within the community setting for parent meetings or to Columbus for one conference.
