This role emphasizes prevention, early intervention, and ongoing support of the mental well‑being of officers and first responders by providing confidential services, peer‑based initiatives, and professional resources designed to address direct and indirect trauma encountered in the line of duty. This is a grant‑funded position. Continuation of the role is contingent upon renewal of funding; if the grant is not renewed, the position will not continue.

Responsibilities
  • Designs, implements, and manages a first responder focused mental health program grounded in evidence‑based practices.
  • Coordinates partnerships with licensed mental health professionals, peer support teams, and community resources.
  • Develops specialized workshops on trauma response, resilience, and coping strategies.
  • Strengthens the Peer Support Program by equipping peer support team with enhanced training and resources.
  • Prepares reports and recommendations for continuous improvement.
  • Ensures compliance with confidentiality standards, legal requirements, and grant reporting obligations.
  • Provides confidential, specialized, evidence‑based services that reduce stress and trauma for first responders.
  • Helps within the community to provide resources and knowledge with mental health issues and calls for service.
  • Reduces stigma associated with seeking help through safe, effective, and confidential services.
  • Interacts professionally and respectfully with the public, coworkers and others in the course of daily work.
  • Performs related duties as directed when such duties are a logical and appropriate assignment to the position.
  • Regular and timely attendance is required for this position.
Skills, Knowledge and Abilities
  • Broad knowledge of trauma‑informed care, stress management, and culturally competent practices.
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills and proficiency in various software packages including Microsoft Office.
  • Ability to establish trust and maintain strict confidentiality.
  • Team player who can work in a fast‑paced environment with deadlines.
  • Excellent interpersonal and problem‑solving skills.
  • Ability to produce all reports, correspondence and other documents without support staff.
  • Ability to communicate with internal and external customers across disciplines and with diverse stakeholders.
Education, Experience and Other Requirements

Requires a Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in social work, behavioral science, counseling or related field; or an equivalent combination of education, training and/or experience that provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities to perform the essential functions of the job.

Experience working with law enforcement, first responders, or other high‑stress professions preferred.

Position requires applicant to pass a full background investigation and polygraph test.

Must be in compliance with the department’s drug and tattoo policy.

Due to Criminal Justice Information Security (CJIS) requirements, the candidate must never have been convicted, put on court‑ordered community supervision, or probation for any criminal offense above the grade of Class B misdemeanor or a Class B misdemeanor within the last ten years from the date of the court order. Class A Misdemeanor Conviction, Deferred Adjudication or Felony Conviction are permanent disqualifiers.

Must have a valid Texas driver’s license with an acceptable driving record as defined by City policy.

Must pass a pre‑employment drug screen, Titmus vision screening and Ishihara vision screening.

Position may require after hours obligations.
