SummaryUnder close supervision, performs maintenance, repairs, adjustments, and preventative maintenance and repairs on City vehicles, and heavy equipment, in accordance with all safety regulations and procedures.

Essential duties and responsibilities may include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Performs maintenance, repairs, adjustments and preventive maintenance on equipment and other specialty machinery; duties may vary according to job assignment.
- Inspects and diagnoses mechanical, electrical and hydraulic problems on tools and equipment and determines the extent of necessary repairs, prioritizes work, and performs repairs within scope of authority and training, and in accordance with all safety regulations and procedures.
- Performs preventive maintenance on equipment and machinery to maximize the effective life cycle, reduce downtime, and improve the productivity of City workers; performs specialized repair and maintenance work to bring tools and equipment into compliance with safety and regulatory violations.
- Performs equipment inspections and installs specialized components, ensuring all systems meet operational and safety requirements.
- Maintains records and logs of services performed and general equipment information; opens and closes work orders; documents work hours, parts used and repairs completed using specialized software.
- Transports equipment from the field to the repair shop facility; performs emergency repairs in the field as required; identifies and reports equipment problems requiring additional maintenance and repair; notifies supervisor of repair problems beyond the scope of authority and skills.
- Maintains shop facility, cleans work areas, and removes debris; disposes of lubricants and chemicals in accordance with all safety regulations and procedures.
- Adheres to safety procedures in work areas and in performance of work assignments; promotes a culture of safety.
- Supports the relationship between the City and the general public by demonstrating courteous and cooperative behavior when interacting with citizens, visitors, and City staff; promotes the City goals and priorities and complies with all City policies and procedures.
- Maintains absolute confidentiality of work-related issues and City information; performs other duties as required or assigned.
Education, Training and Experience Guidelines
- High school diploma or GED equivalent
- Two (2) years of experience in the maintenance and repair of vehicles and mechanical equipment; OR an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
- City policies and procedures.
- Methods and tools used in the repair of equipment and specialty machinery.
- Gasoline and diesel engines, mechanical and electrical systems.
- Federal, State and FSD safety rules and regulations, occupational hazards and safety precautions.
- Safety rules, regulations and occupational hazards in repair shop environments including OSHA Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS) for use and storage of hazardous chemicals in the workplace.
- City geography, traffic patterns, streets, landmarks and facility locations.
- Inspecting, diagnosing and repairing mechanical problems in a wide variety of equipment and specialty machinery.
- Identifying maintenance needs and mechanical problems and taking corrective actions.
- Performing computerized diagnostic tests and calibrations on equipment components and equipment.
