Overview
Conductor in Training
The purpose of this position is to provide exceptional customer service, work as part of a team responsible for the safe movement of train passengers, and verify and collect fares. Trainees will receive a rate of $24.02 per hour during a 9-week training period that may include evenings and weekends. Upon successful completion of the training program, trainees will be paid $29.64 per hour.

Knowledge and Experience- College degree, or an equivalent combination of relevant work experience and training. (Minimum requirements are high school diploma, GED, or equivalent credentials.)
- Preferred experience in a customer service role that involves problem resolution, as well as a work history demonstrating the ability to adapt to various work hours.
- Proven ability to successfully complete a rigorous training program to uphold necessary qualifications as it relates to FRA regulations as it pertains to railroad safety.
- Demonstrated experience working in a safety sensitive environment coupled with ability to troubleshoot and effectively communicate with internal and external key stakeholders.
- Work experience exhibiting responsibility, initiative, and other leadership characteristics.
- Prior mechanical experience and knowledge specific to the transportation industry or similar field.
- Be able to communicate successfully with a variety of disciplines and levels including internal and external staff while working independently or in a team setting.
- Proven ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with supervisors, co-workers, customers, and vendors.
- Practical experience or working knowledge of standard operating procedures and ability to interpret, follow and implement written procedures.
- Experience with diagnostics and troubleshooting of electrical circuits and equipment in the transportation industry or other related fields.

- Perform duties in an environment requiring physical agility to easily get on/off train equipment, maneuver between cars, bend, reach and stoop, and safely ride the side of the train while lifting various equipment.
- Maintain understanding of operating characteristics and practices, including safety rules, air brakes rules, electrical instructions, equipment troubleshooting practices and emergency procedures.
- Think and function independently, using clear and effective verbal communication to interact with passengers, crew members and others jointly accountable for safe and efficient train movement and customer service.
- Assist the Conductor with oversight of all on-train employees in service delivery by adhering to safety and service standards.
- Ensure all revenue documents (cash, credit card receipts, proof of payment) are collected and verified in accordance with designated tariffs. Assist movement of trains by adhering to applicable operation rules and practices.
- Adhere to all safety rules and regulations to ensure the safety of passengers and crew members.
- Assist in submitting reports to record movement delays, unusual occurrences, passenger inconveniences and mechanical defects.
- Assist in boarding and detraining passengers, baggage, express shipments, and mail.
- Ensure each passenger has the proper fare and maintains a safe and orderly environment by displaying professionalism.
- Work in either a passenger or non-passenger operation, including yard duty and work trains.
- Secure movement orders and ensure clear understanding by the operating crew.
- Ensure pre-determined service requests are understood and conducted.
- Safely ride the side of train equipment, getting on and off as required.
- Make special arrangements in case of service failure.
- Other duties as assigned, including emergency situations.
- Successfully complete a seven- to eight-week training course, including classroom instruction followed by extensive qualifying and on-the-job training associated with the assigned Crew Base.
- A current valid driver’s license is required to travel throughout the Commuter Rail network and locations as assigned.
- Report for work on short notice and work weekends and holidays. Works a variety of hours within a 24/7 transportation environment.
- Understand and comply with Keolis Commuter Services uniform and grooming standards when engaged in performing passenger service.
- Physically move between and around train cars, manipulating and lifting heavy air hoses and electrical cables.
- Ability to work in all weather conditions including extreme heat, cold, rain and snow.
- Near vision to see details at close range; far vision for distance; color vision for railroad colors.
- Oral comprehension and listening ability; control precision to operate equipment accurately.
- Repeated lifting of 40 lb objects to chest height up to ten times per hour.
