Position Summary
This position supports the work of the Y, a leading nonprofit committed to strengthening community through youth development, healthy living and social responsibility. It maintains safe swimming conditions in the pool, on the deck, and surrounding areas, creating a safe and positive atmosphere that promotes member safety and engagement in accordance with YMCA policies and procedures.
LocationThis position could potentially rotate between Bridgewater YMCA and Somerville YMCA.
Shift and Schedule- 4:45 AM – 10:00 AM (must be willing to work at least three days a week)
- 6:00 AM – 12:00 PM (additional time slots available)
- 10:00 AM – 4:00 PM
- 5:00 AM – 7:00 AM: $19–$21
- Maintain active surveillance of the pool area.
- Address member concerns, direct members to program areas or lane needs, and support the overall Aquatic team.
- Assist with swim lessons and deck supervision as needed by department operations.
- Know and review all emergency procedures, respond to emergency situations immediately, and complete related reports as required.
- Apply safety rules, policies, and guidelines for the pool and aquatic area, and maintain accurate records required by the YMCA and/or the state Health Department code.
- Walk the perimeter of the pool and scan the bottom before taking over the lifeguard stand.
- Perform equipment checks and ensure appropriate equipment is available as needed.
- Check the pool for hazardous conditions when arriving.
- Perform chemical testing when not guarding, as required, and take appropriate action.
- Attend all staff meetings and in‑service training.
- Maintain effective, positive relationships with members, participants, and other staff.
- Dress in Uniform – Required Items:
Lifeguard Shirt, bathing suit, whistle, and PPE hip bag. - Demonstrate emotional resiliency, cognitive abilities, interpersonal skills, and respect for social and cultural diversity while establishing and maintaining appropriate professional relationships.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
- Minimum age of 18.
- Certifications:
CPR for the Professional Rescuer, AED, Basic First Aid, and Emergency Oxygen. - Current YMCA or ARC Lifeguard or equivalent certification.
- Ability to maintain certification‑level physical and mental readiness.
- Must demonstrate lifesaving skills in accordance with YMCA standards.
- Physical demands include performing all skills required of a lifeguard and remaining alert with no lapse of consciousness.
- Ability to hear distress signals in the aquatic environment, including in the water and around the zone of responsibility.
- Ability to see and observe all sections of an assigned zone or area of responsibility.
