Assistant or Associate Professor of Anthropology & Director of Anthropological Studies Center

Sonoma State University invites applications for the position of Assistant or Associate Professor of Anthropology and Director of the Anthropological Studies Center (ASC). The role has a start date of July 2026 and is a 12‑month, full‑time, tenured/tenure‑track appointment.

Faculty Responsibilities
  • Teach and assess courses, maintain office hours, and mentor students at the undergraduate and graduate levels.
  • Engage in service to the university, professional society, and community, including advising, committee work, and participation in institutional initiatives such as the CSU Graduation Initiative 2025.
  • Collaborate with colleagues and contribute to a teacher‑scholar model that supports graduate research and other professional opportunities for students.
  • Work effectively in a multicultural environment.
Duties of the Position
  • Faculty member in Anthropology with a teaching load of one course per semester, tailored to expertise in North American archaeology, cultural heritage and resources management (CHRM), and related areas.
  • Lead the ASC as Director: secure regulatory contracts and research grants, serve as principal investigator, manage a team of 15–20 staff, and coordinate compliance with NAGPRA.
  • Support the CHRM MS program, chair thesis/project committees, participate in governance, and potentially serve as rotating department chair or program coordinator.
Required Qualifications
  • Ph.D. in Anthropology, Archaeology, or a closely related field.
  • Significant experience in CHRM with demonstrated ability to identify, secure, and manage research grants and regulatory contracts.
  • Experience collaborating with tribal, descendant, and stakeholder communities.
  • Specialization in North American pre‑Contact, ethnohistoric, or historical archaeology.
  • Proven teaching effectiveness at undergraduate and/or graduate levels and a record of fostering an inclusive learning environment.
  • Effective communication skills with a diverse team of staff and faculty.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience in Indigenous and/or community‑based archaeology.
  • Research interests in digital/non‑invasive technologies, geoarchaeology, traditional ecological knowledge, or environmental archaeology applied to CHRM.
  • Regional specialization in California or the western United States.
Rank and Salary

Rank:
Assistant or Associate Professor. Salary range: $97,000 to $120,000, depending on background, experience, and rank.
