Reports to the Lab Technical Supervisor. Independently performs qualitative and quantitative laboratory tests in assigned section(s) following established policies and procedures. Identifies problems that may adversely affect test performance and/or results and uses knowledge, deductive skills and judgment to troubleshoot and resolve them.
Responsibilities- Perform qualitative and quantitative laboratory tests in assigned sections following established policies and procedures.
- Document and report results following prescribed instructions and predetermined criteria.
- Notify physicians of critical lab values immediately.
- Adhere to established QA/QC policies and procedures.
- Recognize abnormal or unusual pre-analytical and post-analytical problems; use corrective action procedures and notify supervisor as appropriate.
- Independently operate, calibrate and perform checks; maintain laboratory instruments and equipment following written criteria.
- Maintain procedures, records and logs as directed.
- Prepare specimens and supplies for transport or shipping per shipping regulations.
- Maintain appropriate levels of supplies and reagents and place orders as needed.
- Maintain cleanliness of laboratory; handle body fluids with proper precautions and waste disposal per OSHA guidelines.
- Identify and correct problems affecting test performance or reporting; notify supervisor as needed.
- Provide technical information about laboratory tests and results to physicians and other authorized individuals.
- Receive and collect specimens for testing, including drawing blood, collecting urine and handling other bodily materials and fluids as needed.
- Accession and process specimens for testing as needed.
- Perform responsibilities of testing personnel for high and moderate complexity testing as defined under CFR.

- Complete other job-related assignments and special projects as directed.
- Assume charge duty responsibilities as assigned.
- Attend and participate in department meetings; be accountable for information shared.
- Complete mandatory education, annual competencies and department-specific education within established time frames.
- Complete annual employee health requirements within established time frames.
- Maintain license/certification, registration in good standing throughout fiscal year.
- Direct patient care providers are required to maintain current BCLS (CPR) and other certifications as required by position/department.
- Utilize universal precautions and protective equipment to protect patients and self.
- Adhere to regulatory requirements, survey processes and compliance.
- Comply with organization and department policies.

- Associate's degree in medical laboratory technology or in a chemical, physical or biological science; completion of a CAHEA-accredited Medical Laboratory Technician program.
- Certification as a technician by an appropriate accrediting agency (e.g., ASCP, HEW/HHS or equivalent) required within one year of graduation or hire.
- One year related medical laboratory experience preferred.
- Must qualify as testing personnel for high and moderate complexity testing as defined under CFR.
493.1489 and CFR.
493.1423 and qualify as a CLIA General Supervisor for high complexity testing when assigned those duties.
- In-depth knowledge of medical laboratory procedures and testing systems; ability to perform tests, interpret results, perform quality control checks and maintain instrumentation.
- Ability to work in a fast-paced, quality-focused environment with multiple priorities and deadlines.
- Interpersonal and communication skills to maintain effective relationships with patients, medical staff, and others.
- Proficient computer skills and knowledge of laboratory information systems and applications.
- Possible exposure to communicable diseases, hazardous substances, chemicals and other conditions common to a hospital laboratory.
- Physical ability to stand for long periods, walk, and lift up to 35 pounds; requires visual acuity, color perception, fine motor skills and hand-eye coordination.
