Responsibilities
  • Perform qualitative and quantitative clinical laboratory tests in assigned section(s) following established policies and procedures.
  • Identify problems that may adversely affect test performance and/or results and troubleshoot and resolve them using knowledge, deductive skills and judgment.
  • Document and report results following prescribed instructions and predetermined criteria.
  • Notify physicians of critical lab values immediately.
  • Adhere to established QA/QC policies and procedures, including documenting all QA/QC activities, implementing corrective actions, and performing proficiency testing.
  • Evaluate QA/QC data and proficiency testing reports, recognize problems and discuss resolution with supervisor, and perform QC reviews as assigned.
  • Recognize abnormal or unusual pre‑analytical and post‑analytical problems, use established corrective action procedures and judgment to take appropriate follow‑up actions, document all corrective actions and notify supervisor as appropriate.
  • Operate, calibrate and conduct performance checks on laboratory instruments and equipment according to written criteria.
  • Maintain procedures, records and logs following established procedures.
  • Prepare specimens and supplies for transport or shipping, and follow applicable shipping regulations.
  • Maintain appropriate levels of supplies and reagents and place orders as needed.
  • Maintain laboratory cleanliness, clean spills with special attention to body fluid precautions and dispose of contaminated waste per OSHA guidelines.
  • Receive and collect specimens for laboratory testing, including drawing blood, collecting urine and handling other bodily materials and fluids from patients as needed.
  • Accession and process specimens for laboratory testing as needed.
  • Identify problems that may adversely affect test performance or reporting of test results; correct problems or immediately notify supervisor.
  • Provide instruction to new associates and students in routine procedures following established criteria.
  • Provide technical information about laboratory tests and results to physicians and other authorized individuals.
  • Perform responsibilities of testing personnel for high and moderate complexity testing as defined in CFR 493.1495 and CFR 493.1425.
  • When qualified, fulfill duties of a Technical Consultant for a moderately complex lab (CFR 493.1413) and/or a General Supervisor for a highly complex lab (CFR 493.1463).
Other Functions
  • Participate on committees as requested.
  • Complete job‑related assignments and special projects as assigned.
Organizational Responsibilities
  • Attend and participate in department meetings and be accountable for all information shared.
  • Complete mandatory education, annual competencies and department‑specific education within established time frames.
  • Complete annual employee health requirements within established time frames.
  • Maintain license/certification, registration in good standing throughout the fiscal year.
  • Maintain current BCLS (CPR) and other certifications as required by position/department.
  • Consistently utilize appropriate universal precautions, protective equipment, and ergonomic techniques to protect patients and self.
  • Adhere to regulatory agency requirements, survey process and compliance.
  • Comply with established organization and department policies.
  • Be available to work overtime, additional shifts and schedules when required.

Education and Experience
  • Bachelor’s degree in Medical Laboratory Science or related discipline from a CAHEA‑accredited program, or meeting CFR 493.1489 requirements.
  • Certification as a Medical Laboratory Scientist by ASCP, HEW/HHS or equivalent within one year of graduation or hire.
  • One year related medical laboratory experience preferred.
  • Qualified as testing personnel for high and moderate complexity testing per CFR 493.1489 and CFR 493.1423.
