Reports to the Wound Care Clinical Coordinator. Provides professional nursing wound care in support of medical care as directed by the physician. Prepares patients for examinations and wound treatment, preps wounds for debridement, takes vitals as indicated, takes pre‑ and post‑debridement photographs, assists physician in all aspects of care, and completes dressing changes to include negative pressure wound therapy. Communicates with patients and physicians routinely in a courteous manner.
Performs other activities necessary to the operation of the clinic.
- Perform general nursing care to patients and administer prescribed medications and treatments in accordance with nursing standards.
- Check rooms for supplies, prepare equipment and assist physician during treatment, examination, and testing of patients.
- Maintain orderly and timely flow of patients; ensure preferences are given to patients in emergency situations.
- Greet patients and prepare them for examination/treatment, take basic history, obtain vital signs, and collect specimens as indicated.
- Schedule patient testing, admissions, and referrals and provide patients pretesting instructions.
- Maintain and review patient records and charts, post test results after review by physician, track test results, inform patient of results and recommendations, chart all phone calls, advice, and other contact with patients.
- Respond to and refer incoming phone calls (nursing home, pharmacy, patient, etc.). Call in prescriptions and/or orders to hospital on physician’s order. Advise patient under doctor’s supervision. Instruct patient and family regarding medications and treatment instructions.
- Complete HMO referral forms; transmit information to insurance companies for preadmission screening or utilization review.
- Assist in patient education as needed (e.g., insulin teaching, self wound care, home blood pressure monitoring).
- Assist doctor in billing for hospital services, turning in charges.
- Prepare and maintain trays or carts for wound procedures.
- Ensure proper consent forms are completed and signed prior to procedures or surgeries.
- Maintain cleanliness of exam rooms and proper cleanup of spills with special attention to body fluid precautions and contaminated waste per OSHA guidelines; follow universal precautions.
- Inform proper personnel when medications and supplies need to be ordered.
- Complete other job‑related duties and projects as assigned.
- Attend and participate in department meetings and be accountable for all information shared.
- Complete mandatory education, annual competencies and department‑specific education within established time frames.
- Complete annual employee health requirements within established time frames.
- Maintain license/certification, registration in good standing throughout fiscal year.
- Direct patient care providers are required to maintain current BCLS (CPR) and other certifications as required by position/department.
- Consistently utilize appropriate universal precautions, protective equipment, and ergonomic techniques to protect patient and self.
- Adhere to regulatory agency requirements, survey process and compliance.
- Comply with established organization and department policies.
