Job Summary:
The Plumber is responsible for installing, maintaining, and repairing piping systems, plumbing fixtures, and related equipment throughout the school facilities. This role ensures the functionality of water, drainage, and other plumbing systems to maintain safe and efficient school operations. The Plumber works independently or as part of a team to address plumbing issues in a timely manner, ensuring that all work complies with safety regulations and local codes.
Principal Characteristics of Work
* Types of Activities Performed Frequently:
The Plumber is responsible for installing, repairing, and maintaining plumbing systems, including water supply and drainage systems, toilets, sinks, faucets, and water heaters. They troubleshoot and diagnose plumbing issues such as leaks, clogs, and system malfunctions, while performing routine inspections to identify potential problems and ensure optimal system performance. The role also involves operating plumbing tools and equipment, including pipe cutters, wrenches, augers, and pipe benders, and cutting, threading, and joining pipes using hand tools, pipe fittings, and welding equipment.
The Plumber replaces defective plumbing fixtures, pipes, and fittings to maintain safe and efficient water flow and keeps accurate records of repairs, inspections, and maintenance schedules. Additionally, they assist with the installation of backflow prevention devices and other specialized plumbing equipment as necessary.
* Types of Activities Performed Occasionally:
The Plumber is responsible for planning and estimating plumbing projects, including recommending the necessary tools, materials, and supplies. They collaborate with other maintenance staff and school administrators to prioritize and complete plumbing-related tasks, ensuring efficient project completion. The Plumber also participates in training sessions focused on plumbing techniques, safety practices, and updates to relevant codes to stay current with industry standards.
Responsibilities
* Install and repair pipes, fittings, and fixtures for water distribution and wastewater disposal systems.
* Ensure that plumbing installations comply with local building codes and safety regulations.
* Respond promptly to emergency plumbing issues, minimizing downtime and disruption to school operations.
* Inspect plumbing systems for leaks, corrosion, and other issues, providing timely solutions.
* Use power tools, hand tools, and specialized plumbing equipment safely and efficiently.
* Maintain cleanliness and organization of work areas, tools, and equipment.
* Ensure proper operation of plumbing systems, making adjustments and repairs as necessary.
* Monitor inventory and order plumbing materials and supplies to maintain adequate stock.
* Maintain compliance with safety protocols, including the use of personal protective equipment (PPE) and safe handling of chemicals and equipment.
Qualifications
* Required Experience or Training
A high school diploma or equivalent is required. A minimum of three (3) years of experience in plumbing, including commercial or institutional systems, is necessary. Must possess or be able to obtain a valid plumbing license. Ability to lift up to 60 pounds without assistance. Must possess a valid driver's license and be able to pass any required background checks.
* Desired Experience or Training
Completion of a formal plumbing apprenticeship or post-secondary technical training is preferred. Additional experience with backflow prevention, specialized plumbing equipment, or water treatment systems is desirable. Familiarity with plumbing system design, maintenance, and repair codes is also beneficial.
* Special Requirements
Must have practical knowledge of plumbing systems, including water supply, drainage, and waste management. Ability to work independently and as part of a maintenance team.
