GENERAL STATEMENT OF THE INSTRUCTIONAL COACH JOB

Under the supervision of the Office of Teaching and Learning in consultation with the building level principal, the reading coach plans and presents innovative, appropriate professional development needed to maximize the instructional impact of core content area teachers on student learning. Coordinates with the school-based instructional coaches, building level administrators, and the school’s literacy leadership team to ensure that teachers are provided the professional development and support needed to implement instructional best practices consistently.

Coaches all teachers and school leaders towards highly effective instructional practices for twenty-first century learning.

Essential Functions of the Job Provides Support
  • Conducts daily classroom observations in order to provide teachers with effective support and feedback.
  • Coaches and co-plans instruction and assessments with teachers using the SC State Standards in ELA, Math, Social Studies, and Science as well as resources provided by the district.
  • Collaborates and demonstrates effective instruction by teaching weekly in the form of demonstration lessons, co-teaching, and modeling best practices in classrooms.
  • Provides guidance and support to school leadership to ensure compliance with Read to Succeed legislation.
  • Serves on the School Literacy Leadership Team and provides guidance in the development, implementation, and monitoring of the School Reading Plan.
  • Interprets curriculum, instructional programs, assessments, and resources to administrators, teachers, staff and the community.
  • Responds efficiently, professionally, and inclusively to inquiries and requests for support from teachers, the principals, and other school personnel.
  • Interacts and communicates effectively with various groups and individuals, such as teachers, principals, professional peers, district consultants, district instructional coaches, external consultants, and State Department of Education personnel.
  • Collaborates with Principals and school leadership teams to monitor instruction, provide support to teachers and implement school improvement plans.
  • Reading and math interventionists to implement literacy strategies across all core content areas.
  • Curriculum Resource Teacher and district consultants to develop, implement, and monitor improvement plans for the school.
  • Teachers and parents to reinforce efforts to support student progress.
Provides Professional Development
  • Develops short- and long-range plans to support professional development of teachers.
  • Plans and facilitates intensive staff development sessions on research-based, best instructional practices.
  • Provides professional development needed for teachers to meet Read to Succeed Endorsement requirements.
  • Assists with the development, articulation, and implementation of the district’s curriculum designed to support teaching required of the state standards.
  • Engages in district professional development conferences, workshops, and other learning activities in a manner that enables the coach to transfer the knowledge to school personnel.
  • Keeps abreast of professional development innovations to ensure that staff members remain current, focused on research- and evidence-based instruction, and are properly trained.
Analyzes and Applies Data
  • Partners with and leads teachers in analyzing student achievement data to identify patterns and instructional strengths and deficiencies.
  • Utilizes diagnostic assessments to determine student strengths and deficiencies as well as patterns represented among grade levels that indicate professional development needs and coaching support.
  • Maintains accurate and complete data, representing student learning in the school and collaborate with administrators, teachers, and parents on assessment results.
