Job Summary

The University of South Carolina School of Medicine Greenville (USC SOMG) invites applications for a full‑time, non‑tenure track faculty position at the rank of Instructor in Medical Information & Library Sciences. This role supports the medical education mission by enhancing health sciences education, research, and patient care through the planning, development, delivery, and evaluation of high‑quality health information and instruction. The successful candidate will work collaboratively with faculty, residents, students, and clinicians to promote evidence‑based decision‑making and scholarly activity.

This position is equally dedicated to Graduate Medical Education (GME) and Undergraduate Medical Education (UME), and will be a key contributor to residency training and medical student learning.

Job Duties
  • Teaching – 20%
    • Lead educational programs on information literacy, evidence‑based healthcare, and curriculum‑related activities in GME and UME.
    • Coordinate instruction and information services for USC SOMG‑sponsored residency programs.
    • Assist faculty, residents, and students in preparing evidence for clinical review sessions (e.g., journal clubs, morbidity and mortality sessions).
    • Provide instruction on locating and organizing information for patient care and scholarly activities.
    • Collaborate with USC SOMG and Prisma Health library teams to support teaching, research, and learning.
  • Research – 40%
    • Support faculty, residents, and students in scholarly activities including grant and manuscript submissions and research consultations.
    • Provide one‑on‑one literature search assistance and training for summer research students.
    • Contribute to professional literature, evidence‑based care, and participate in scholarly dissemination.
  • Service – 40%
    • Answer reference questions via phone, email, and remote access.
    • Provide consultations and instruction both in person and virtually.
    • Participate in working groups, campus programs, and committees.
    • Engage professionally in local, regional, and national associations.
    • Strategic planning and implementation of comprehensive library services, resources, and development of collections.
    • Serve as liaison to vendors/publishers in managing and executing automations, functionality, and reliability of library resources; resolve product issues, enhancements, and licensure requirements; ensure resource platforms reflect emerging updates and technologies.
    • Maintain flexibility and assume other duties as assigned.
Required

Education and Experience
  • MLIS from an ALA‑accredited program OR other graduate degree with relevant experience and current enrollment in a MLIS program.
  • Minimum of two years of relevant professional experience (post‑MLS or work experience in health sciences practice).
  • Evidence of meeting university standards in librarianship, teaching, scholarship, and service.
  • Knowledge of health information resources and services (e.g., Pub Med, Up To Date , Clinical Key).
  • Experience working with health professional faculty, students, and/or clinicians.
  • Ability to develop and deliver instruction both individually and in classroom/clinical settings.
  • Familiarity with citation management software and Lib Guides or similar tools.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills and collaborative problem‑solving abilities.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Expertise in teaching evidence‑based medicine topics and developing educational programs that support information literacy and evidence‑based healthcare practices.
  • Bachelor’s degree in the sciences or demonstrated interest in library research in the sciences.
  • Experience designing instructional support materials in various formats.
  • Understanding of the academic healthcare environment and the library’s role within it.
