Transportation Engineering Technician IV

Under limited supervision, serves at the Transportation Engineering Technician IV assisting the Resident Bridge Engineer in all aspects of bridge maintenance in District
4. Provides guidance to bridge maintenance crews in the absence of the RBE. Assists the RBE in overseeing the performance and scheduling of the Bridge Maintenance Crews to ensure optimum productivity and quality as well as adherence to plans, specifications, and standard drawings. Conducts weekly foreman meetings on behalf of the RBE and reports weekly location assignments of the crews to the RBE, DBE, and District OSHA staff.

Coordinates the training and scheduling for new CDLs, crane certifications, and other certifications as needed. Schedules and organizes monthly safety meetings. Assists the RBE in review of HMMS records and data for completeness and accuracy. Coordinates new and turned in uniforms and monitors compliance on behalf of the RBE. Assists the RBE and DBE in the review of Bridge Inspection Reports and the evaluation of critical findings and bridge flags to determine the appropriate repairs, materials, equipment, tools, job site hazards and schedule.

Assists the RBE in the review of vehicles, equipment, and multiple facilities including but not limited to monitoring preventative maintenance, inspection of crane hoists and slings, quarterly facility inspections, fuel usage, nurse tanks, and monthly fuel logs. Assists the RBE in ensuring the safety of Bridge Maintenance employees including work zone, PPE, vehicle and equipment safety, and job site hazards by performing routine safety inspections.

Must obtain CEPSCI certification to review compliance at all job sites. Assists the RBE in the procurement of all tools and materials necessary for all Bridge Maintenance activities in accordance with the State Procurement Code. Assists in emergency or inclement weather operations throughout the District and State including inclement weather operations and special inspections after an event such as a Maintenance Repair or Rehabilitation, collision, or natural disaster.

May include being available for extended hours or extended shift operations. Performs other related duties as assigned.

A high school diploma and four and one-half (4.5) years of progressively responsible engineering technician related experience; or an approved acceptable equivalence. Attainment of a Technician Certification in accordance with the SCDOT Technician Certification Policy may substitute for six (6) months of directly related experience. A motor vehicle operator’s license is required.

The physical demands for the essential functions of this position involve sitting or standing at a desk for extended periods of time. This position may require occasional travel. This position may require bending, stooping, reaching, twisting, climbing, balancing, and kneeling. This position required driving and walking for extended periods, treading rough and uneven terrain, working in close proximity to motoring traffic, and natural environmental hazards.

Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs. May be required to work outside of normal work schedule, especially during inclement weather and/or other departmental-related emergencies. This position may be exposed to outside environment in all weather conditions and noise.
