General Maintenance Technician II

Maintenance Technician – Facilities Management Unit, South Carolina Criminal Justice Academy (Academy).

The Academy is seeking a Maintenance Technician to supervise and assist inmate personnel in maintenance, groundskeeping, and custodial functions.

• Supervise and assist inmate staff in general maintenance and custodial duties.
• Conduct weekly safety meetings and training for assigned inmate staff.
• Perform accurate inmate staff counts throughout the day.
• Assist in developing and implementing preventive maintenance programs for existing and newly acquired equipment.
• Operate a van to transport inmate staff as needed; maintain accurate vehicle logs.
• Conduct vehicle inspections to ensure assigned vehicles are safe and operable.
• Ensure compliance with all traffic laws and safety regulations.
• Perform occasional weekend duties as operational needs require.

• High school diploma.
• One year of job-related experience.

• Ability to plan and supervise the work of the inmate personnel.
• Considerable knowledge in the use of various trades and craft tools and equipment.
• Must be able to handle and respond to emergency situations.
• Must possess the knowledge and skills to perform protection and security practices.
• Must have the ability to communicate verbally and in writing.
• Must be able to lift and carry at least widgets 50 lbs for prolonged distances (at least 50 feet).
• Must be able to walk (300 yards) and stand for long periods of time (2 1/2 hours) and climb steps, stairs, and inclined ADA ramps.
• Must be able to endure adverse weather conditions.
• Must be available for occasional weekend work.
