Job Summary

The Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) role may be either CMA or Registered Medical Assistant (CMA/RMA) and is a member of the patient‑care team. The assistant provides direct and indirect patient care under the direction of a provider, supports patient intake at office visits, documentation, vaccine and medication administration, clerical and environmental tasks, appointment scheduling and record maintenance in EPIC EHR, and may also serve as a provider’s scribe.

Minimum Qualifications

Minimum Education
  • High School Diploma or Equivalent, completed by March 31, 2026, plus at least one of the following:
  • A medical‑assisting program accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs or its successor, or the Accrediting Bureau of Health Education Schools or a U.S. Department of Education‑recognized accrediting agency, covering anatomy, physiology, medical terminology, pharmacology, laboratory techniques, and clinical experience (work experience acceptable).
  • A Career and Technical Education Health Sciences Program approved by the South Carolina Department of Education.
  • A medical‑assisting program provided by a branch of the U.S. military.
  • An U.S. Department of Labor‑approved Registered Apprenticeship program in medical assisting.
  • A training program delivered, in whole or in part, by a health‑care employer that aligns with a nationally accredited certification exam.

Required Certifications & Licensure
  • Active certification or registry in Medical Assisting from a board‑approved certifying body that is accredited by the National Commission for Certifying Agencies or a recognized alternative.
  • Current Basic Life Support certification (BLS) or the ability to obtain it within 90 days of hire.

  • Completion of the basic LMC competency assessment for CMAs within the initial probationary period (or any extension thereof).
Essential Functions
  • Works cooperatively in line with LMC’s Service Expectations policy.
  • Participates in patient‑care activities.
  • Records patient data and observations in accordance with credentials.
  • Provides and maintains safety measures in office standards.
  • Recognizes and acts on the need for safety measures to prevent injury.
  • Creates a comfortable care environment in accordance with office standards.
  • Prepares patients for departure, reinforcing instructions and education.
  • Manages medications following LMC policy, procedures, and scope of practice.
  • Enters pertinent information into Epic and validates accuracy.
  • Schedules physician appointments, requests copies of the medical record, and arranges referrals.
  • Demonstrates knowledge and effective use of medical terminology.
  • Maintains stock levels of clerical supplies.
  • Restocks or orders supplies as needed.
  • Removes outdated forms or supplies.
