Are you scientifically minded? Do you enjoy the process of chemistry and finding results? The SC Department of Agriculture is looking for a Laboratory Chemist to join our amazing laboratory team! As a Chemist in our Residue Laboratory, you will:
- Perform qualitative and quantitative chemical, microbiological, and physical analyses of biomass, animal feed, etc. to assure products meet acceptable standards of quality, using methodology provided in the Laboratory's Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
- Receive and document samples submitted to the Laboratory for analysis.
- Operate and maintain analytical instrumentation and equipment (UHPLC, GCMS, ICP-OES, ICP-MS, LCMS, Protein analyzer, pH meters, spectrophotometers) according to operating manuals, standard operating procedures, and continuous practical experience.
- Conduct troubleshooting on instrumentation and equipment when required.
- Complete method validation analyses to create and improve testing methods.
- Review and report all analytical results once analysis is completed and ensure all quality control measures are executed, and data is accurately entered into Laboratory Inventory Management System (LIMS).
- Maintain reagent and supply inventory for laboratory.
- Abide by state and federal rules and regulations.
- Ensure laboratory is kept neat and orderly, providing a clean working environment for sample analysis.

- A bachelor's degree in chemistry and at least two years' experience in a laboratory setting related to the area of employment, including experience in operating and interpreting test results from complex analytical instrumentation such as gas, ion or liquid chromatographs or atomic absorption spectrophotometers.
- A bachelor's degree in the natural sciences with academic credits in chemistry and at least two years' experience in a laboratory setting related to the area of employment, including experience in operating and interpreting test results from complex analytical instrumentation such as gas, ion or liquid chromatographs or atomic absorption spectrophotometers.
- A doctorate in chemistry may be substituted for the required work experience.
- Knowledge of state and federal rules and regulations for handling controlled substances.
- Knowledge of the principles and laboratory application of chemistry.
- Skill in the use of laboratory equipment (UHPLC, GC-MS, LC-MS, ICP-MS, etc.).
- Ability to perform basic scientific mathematical calculations.
- Ability to perform analyses related to an assigned specialty area.
- Ability to cross-train laboratory personnel.
- Ability to multi-task, utilizing time management skills.
- Ability to communicate effectively with supervisor and co-workers.
- Must be physically able to stand or sit long periods of time and lift up to 50 pounds.
- Occasional overnight travel is required.
- Requires flexible work schedule for special events to include working weekends, market events, and department sponsored functions.
