Position: Highway Maintenance Worker III Specialized Equipment Operator (61032364)
Location: Columbia

Job Overview

At District One Bridge Maintenance, operators work with specialized equipment including boom trucks, hydraulically operated bridge scaffolds, pile hammers, vibratory hammers, tractor‑trailer 5th wheel combinations, and more for removal, construction, and maintenance of bridges in District One.

Key Responsibilities
  • Operate specialized equipment for bridge removal, construction, and maintenance.
  • Maintain ASME B30.5 safety certifications and required medical examinations.
  • Operate heavy equipment such as backhoes and excavators.
  • Perform crane rigging and signaling duties, requiring proper qualification.
  • Assist in bridge repairs (concrete spall, joint, pile, rail, etc.) using power tools (drills, saws).
  • Construct wood forms and miscellaneous carpentry projects under limited supervision.
  • Perform arc and MIG welding, and operate oxygen/acetylene cutting torches for maintenance and construction.
  • Assist and train others in using levels, laser levels, and grade rods for project layout.
  • Maintain construction and maintenance records for piles and surveys; calculate pile bearing with limited supervision.
Qualifications
  • Minimum of two (2) years of related work experience or an approved equivalence.
  • Valid motor‑vehicle operator’s license required upon entry.
  • Must obtain a Class A Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) within six (6) months of placement.
Physical Demands

The essential functions require bending, stooping, reaching, twisting, climbing, balancing, kneeling, pushing, pulling, grasping, and manipulating objects of varied size, shape, weight, and material. Ability to lift up to 50 lbs. is required. The position involves walking for extended periods over rough and uneven terrain, working in close proximity to traffic and natural hazards, and exposure to the elements, noise, oil, and grease on a daily basis.

May be required to work overtime, nighttime, and/or weekends, especially during hazardous weather or emergencies.
