This is a temporary position for students who will provide intraoperative care to selected patients by functioning as the scrub person and assisting the surgical team during operative procedures. Assists other perioperative team members in the care of the surgical patient.
Minimum Qualifications- Currently enrolled in a Surgical Tech program
- High school diploma or equivalent
- BLS certification within 30 days of hire
- Prior patient care experience.
- Performs the scrub role during selectively assigned surgical procedures in the OR.
- Utilizes quality aseptic technique when working in an unsterile or sterile role in the OR.
- Assists the circulating RN in monitoring technique of all persons in the OR to maintain a sterile field.
- Performs sponge, instrument, and needle counts with the circulating RN following established policies and using counting technology.
- Assists by gowning and gloving surgeons, positioning equipment and instruments.
- Passes sterile instruments to the surgical team during a surgical procedure.
- Operates specialty equipment after receiving specific training.
- Assists with transportation and positioning of OR patients.
- Performs designated procedures as needed following departmental policies/procedures/practice guidelines.
- Processes supplies, instruments, and equipment used in patient care by preparing supplies/equipment for surgical procedures following preference cards.
- Assists with sterilization by cleaning used instruments during case and at case conclusion; loads case cart post‑procedure.
- Assists with maintenance of sterile and non‑sterile supplies and equipment.
- As assigned, assists with inventory restocking.
- Cleans and prepares work environment; returns equipment to designated storage locations.
- Removes out‑of‑date items; discards or reprocesses following established guidelines.
- Documents appropriately to support the department; assists with clerical work and record‑keeping duties.
- Provides input to the proper recording of patient charges.
- Assists with the transportation of case carts and specialty carts; maintains hallway egress.
- Participates in post‑case cleaning processes.
- Accounts for all sharps used on sterile field; disposes hazardous materials per departmental policies/procedures.
- Capable of prolonged periods of standing and walking.
- Ability to lift up to 40 pounds and push/pull heavy loaded carts up to 200 lbs.
- Possess visual, hearing, and oral acuity along with manual dexterity and technical ability.
- Ability to wear personal protective equipment and lead for extended periods of time.
- May be exposed to communicable diseases.
- Must have the ability to follow directions both written and verbal in English.
- Works with people utilizing a teamwork approach.
- Must have the ability to prioritize work tasks and multi‑task.
