Join the West Virginia University Health System’s Surgery Application Program as a Clinical Lead Physician Assistant. The role focuses on comprehensive peri‑operative patient care, multidisciplinary coordination, and education for trainees.
Position SummaryThe Advanced Practice Professional (APP) will manage the surgical patient's care continuum: pre‑operative assessment, intra‑operative support, post‑operative follow‑up, and discharge planning. The APP collaborates with medical specialty teams, reviews care plans, performs diagnostic and therapeutic procedures, and educates residents, nurses, and other professionals.
Minimum Qualifications- Bachelor’s Degree in Physician Assistant studies and graduation from an ARC‑PA approved PA training program.
- Certification by the National Commission for Certification of Physician Assistants.
- Eligibility for licensure with the WV Board of Medicine.
- BLS certification;
Advanced Life Support training at the department’s discretion.
- Preferable acute care or urgent care experience.
- Eligible new graduates will be considered.
- Bachelor’s or Master’s Degree in Physician Assistant studies.
- Manage comprehensive, individualized care for primary, urgent, and peri‑operative patients in the ambulatory setting.
- Conduct pre‑procedure evaluations, consults, acute visits, and wellness visits.
- Complete integrated assessments and determine additional testing or consults per established clinical guidelines.
- Perform and communicate diagnostic test results in accordance with scope of practice.
- Document findings, care plans, and interventions in the medical record.
- Coordinate follow‑up services, tests, and referrals to maintain continuity of care.
- Provide bedside teaching, education, and mentorship to nursing staff, residents, students, and patients.
- Identify and manage unstable or complex situations, including emergent scenarios.
- Lead process improvement initiatives, participate in committees, and contribute to research projects.
- Maintain up‑to‑date knowledge of clinical practices, evidence‑based guidelines, and educational strategies.
Ability to lift, move, stoop, reach, and handle patients and equipment weighing 40+ pounds; endurance for standing, walking, and repetitive motions.
Working Environment- Collaborative team setting with irregular hours.
- Exposure to biohazards, infectious diseases, and medicare equipment hazards.
- Must work in close proximity to patients, including those who are deceased.
- Proficiency with electronic health records and clinical software.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
40 hours per week; exempt, full‑time. Salary commensurate with experience and qualifications.
