Summary

VA Black Hills is seeking a full‑time Physician – Hematology/Oncology. The Staff Hematologist/Oncologist provides expert consultation and treatment to patients in the outpatient Hematology/Oncology clinic and offers feedback and consultation with other services within the Black Hills VA Medical Center. This position is eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP) – a student loan payment reimbursement program.

Qualifications
  • United States citizenship (non‑citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA policy)
  • Doctor of Medicine or an equivalent degree from a VA‑approved school for the year the course of study was completed
  • Current full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, Commonwealth of the United States, or the District of Columbia
  • Residency training approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification (accredited ACGME or AOA programs, or other residencies followed by a minimum of five years of verified practice in the United States)
  • Board Certified or Board Eligible in Hematology/Oncology (reference: VA Qualification Standards)
  • Proficiency in spoken and written English
  • Physical requirements:

    periods of long standing, occasional lifting of moderately heavy objects, long periods of sitting at a computer station, and the ability to maintain high accuracy and adapt work plans during high‑stress situations
Basic Requirements
  • United States citizenship or acceptable non‑citizen status
  • Doctor of Medicine (MD) or equivalent (DO) from a VA‑approved institution
  • Full and unrestricted state license
  • Completed residency training as specified above
  • Board Certified or Eligible in Hematology/Oncology
  • English proficiency (spoken and written)
Duties and Responsibilities
  • Advocate for a Whole Health System of care within each Medical Center
  • Develop personalized health plans for each Veteran in a healing relationship context
  • Locate in the Specialty Medicine Service Line at the Black Hills VA Healthcare System and report to the Chief of Specialty Medicine
  • Provide consultation and follow‑up of medical subspecialty patients in inpatient and/or outpatient settings at the VA Medical Center in Fort Meade, SD
  • Evaluate, triage, and prioritize cases from Primary Care providers and others for outpatient Hematology/Oncology consultations
  • Order, obtain, and evaluate appropriate laboratory testing and prescribe treatment plans
  • Coordinate care with Primary Care providers and other medical personnel in a multidisciplinary system
  • Perform administrative tasks such as peer reviews and Ongoing Professional Practice Evaluations (OPPE)
  • Provide Hematology/Oncology on‑call services as assigned
  • Attend staff meetings and serve on committees, teams, work groups, and peer reviews as requested
  • Complete CME, VA training, HIPAA security training, and other mandatory trainings
  • Provide clinical care within Hematology/Oncology privileges approved by the MEC
  • Perform other duties as assigned
