Seasonal Utility Systems Repairer-Operator

These positions are located in Badlands National Park. The primary purpose of this position is to install, maintain, test, troubleshoot, upgrade, repair, and calibrate a variety of utility systems that require fully developed or journey level skills. The utility equipment and systems maintained at this level involve moderately complex maintenance requirements and fully developed journey level skills.

Responsibilities
  • Troubleshoot, repair, modify, overhaul, test, calibrate, and install a variety of multi-component industrial and precision instruments and equipment. The equipment and systems normally serviced are interdependent electrical, mechanical and hydraulic devices which control and regulate flows, pressures and levels, such as magnetic and differential pressure flowmeters, sonic meters, turbidimeters and other equipment that measure and record operating parameters.
  • Install, repair and calibrate analyzers for turbidity, chlorine and pH as well as the trend recorders associated with these analyzers.
  • Troubleshoot and functionally test equipment to isolate defective components and perform repairs, adjusting and replacing parts as required.
  • Use operating principles, blueprints, diagrams, technical manuals, test equipment and trade tools.
  • Work with various machinery including reciprocating pumps, centrifugal pumps, sewage grinders and electrical motors.
  • Repair machinery by replacing bent shafts, bearings, etc.
  • Perform electrical testing of motors and other components checking continuity, ohm resistance, voltage and amperage using multimeters, meggers and continuity testers.
  • Maintain and troubleshoot systems ranging from large primary voltages to small millivolt/milliamp digital circuit boards, and touch screen equipment.

Additional referral certificates will be issued when a hiring official exhausts current certificates and/or additional vacancies need to be filled.

Conditions of Employment

Qualifications
  • Ability to do the work of the position without more than normal supervision.
  • Ability to interpret instructions, specification, etc., including blueprint reading.
  • Ability to use and maintain tools and equipment.
  • Knowledge of equipment assembly, installation, repair, etc.
  • Knowledge of materials.
  • Technical practices (theoretical precise, artistic).
  • Use of measuring instruments.
Screen Out

Ability to perform the most difficult and complex utility systems repairer‑operator duties as an expert with a high degree of independence. Experience must include operation and maintenance of a water treatment facility, wastewater treatment facility, or a major utility system related to water and wastewater production and treatment, and the ability to perform day‑to‑day activities for process control, lab testing, repairs, and preventative maintenance without assistance.

Familiarity with the monitoring requirements for potable water and prior supervisory experience are required. If the screen‑out criteria are not met, applicants will not receive further consideration.

Volunteer Experience

Experience may include paid and unpaid work, including volunteer work with National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, Ameri Corps) and other organizations. Volunteer work may be credited toward required experience.

Education

No substitution of education for experience is permitted for Wage Grade positions.
