OverviewProvide competitive swimming instruction in a safe environment, ensuring adherence to pool rules and regulations, and using creative techniques to engage children and families.
Responsibilities- Utilize comprehensive knowledge of the rules and fundamentals of the sport of competitive swimming to provide instruction and coaching for various age groups in accordance with National YMCA guidelines and NCAA.
- Communicate with Head Coach to discuss swimmers progress, areas to improve, and opportunities to compete.
- Assist the Head Coach in providing quality instruction to all participants.
- Build relationships with swimmers and their families.
- Ensure the health and safety of all individuals in the pool, advise on unsafe practices, and perform rescue/first aid when necessary.
- Report accidents and injuries and complete accident reports.
- Demonstrate and teach Character Development values of caring, honesty, respect, and responsibility.
- Arrive prepared for scheduled practices (arrive 15 minutes prior), in proper attire, and maintain focus on swimmers.
- Work in harmony with staff, volunteers, and members to develop team spirit and a welcoming atmosphere.
- Monitor and enforce YMCA rules and ensure safety in the pool, locker rooms, and related facilities, including off-site locations.
- Handle disciplinary actions according to YMCA policy and provide guidance at swim meets.
- Encourage swimmer and family participation and complete required reports on time.
- Assist head coach with swimmer substitutions and scratches; attend practices, meets, staff meetings, trainings, and other scheduled functions.
- Maintain good public relations with members and families; escalate major issues to the Aquatic Director as needed.
- Be a member service ambassador and stay informed about current programs and facility schedules; provide personalized directions to other services.
- Education and/or
Experience:
High School (GED) required; competitive swimming and coaching experience preferred. - Experience teaching young children (strongly recommended).
- Reasoning Ability:
Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. - Ability to interpret technical instructions and work with abstract and concrete variables.
- Certifications / Training:
First Aid and CPR Certificate; YMCA Lifeguard Certification (highly recommended);
Oxygen Administration Certificate. - Physical Demands:
Capable of meeting the physical demands of the job as described.
