City of South Lake Tahoe Firefighter / Paramedic Recruitment

Preference will be given to lateral Firefighter/Paramedic candidates with at least one year of Firefighting/Paramedic experience. A paramedic license is required for this position.

Please note, South Lake Tahoe Fire Rescue does perform water rescue and swimming may be a required part of the job.

Selection Process
  • Eligibility List: Candidates must be on the Firefighter Candidate Testing Center's (FCTC) Statewide Eligibility List. The Cal‑JAC CPAT Card must be dated within 12 months from the date the application is received. The minimum qualifications include a passing score of 70% on the FCTC Written Test, passing the Cal‑JAC Candidate Physical Ability Test, and completion of the required profile uploads. Selected candidates will be placed on a 12‑month eligible hiring list and invited to interview.
  • Application Review and Screening: Applications will be reviewed for qualifications and required documentation. Applications that do not meet the minimum qualifications will not move forward. Preference will be given to lateral candidates with at least one year of experience.
  • Background Investigation and Pre‑employment Testing: A thorough background investigation, polygraph, medical examination, drug test, and psychological examination are required prior to appointment.
  • Reasonable Accommodation: The city will provide reasonable accommodations for qualified candidates with disabilities in compliance with Title II of the Americans with Disabilities Act and the California Fair Employment and Housing Act. Applicants must inform Human Resources in writing if accommodations are required during the interview process.
  • Required Documents
  • Current valid California or Nevada driver’s license or equivalent.
  • Current valid Cal‑JAC Candidate Physical Ability Test (CPAT) or BIDDLE physical capability test certificate (valid for 1 year from the test date).
  • Current valid CPR Professional Rescuer through AHA/ARC or a county‑approved equivalent.
  • Current valid CA EMT‑P license.
  • Education and Experience Guidelines

    Education/Training: Equivalent to completion of the twelfth grade.

    Experience: One year of firefighting experience is desirable.

    License or Certificate Requirements
    • Possession of a valid California or Nevada driver’s license or equivalent.
    • Must obtain a CA Class B or A motor vehicle operator’s license, or a Class C with Firefighter Exempt endorsement, within 18 months of employment as a condition of passing probation.
