Job Description

The A.R. Gould School located within the Long Creek Youth Development Center in South Portland, Maine seeks a Special Education Teacher to join their dynamic team.

This is a year-round, 224-day position. Primary responsibility of this position will be to provide evidence-based instructional practices and special education support of various high school subjects to students detained within the Long Creek Youth Development Center, assisting students in their continuing education towards obtaining a high school diploma or GED.

Typical Duties
  • Assessing the level of functioning of all students.
  • IEP development and implementation.
  • Consulting with regular education teachers on IEP modifications and student needs.
  • Coordination work with other schools the student may be transferred to or from.
  • Conduction pre-and post-tests when applicable.
  • Maintaining sources of data collection.
  • Managing student records in a timely and appropriate manner.
  • Participating in staff development activities.
  • Working with others to address and resolve student issues.
  • Serves as a role model while managing student behavior.
  • Helps locate, order, and promote materials to improve reading instruction.
Requirements
  • Knowledge of department functions, objectives, policies, and programs.
  • Knowledge of teaching principles, practices, methods, and techniques.
  • Knowledge of human behavior and performance and individual differences in ability, personality, interests, learning, and motivation.
  • Knowledge of adult and juvenile learning principles, practices, methods, and techniques.
  • Knowledge of curriculum development, classroom instruction, and educational planning in special education.
  • Ability to assess student needs and develop/modify instruction as necessary to support the growth and abilities of all students.
  • Ability to develop curriculum and lesson plans.
  • Ability to prepare clear and concise written reports.
  • Ability to communicate effectively.
  • Ability to work effectively as an individual and as part of a team.

Ability to work with and manage at-risk youth.

Minimum Qualifications

Entry-level knowledge, skills, and/or abilities, which may be acquired through, but not limited to, the following coursework/training and/or experience: A Bachelor’s Degree in Education or a related field.

Certificate for appropriate subject and/or grade(s) as issued by the Department of

Education:
