What We're Looking For
Our growing team is seeking an technically proficient and well‑rounded engineer looking to step into Project Management. The ideal candidate will be motivated to work on small to medium bridge projects throughout Maine, New Hampshire, and Vermont, manage project budget, scope, and schedule, and lead a core team of structural engineers—all while maintaining a healthy work/life balance.
This opportunity entails responsibility for managing assigned project(s) throughout their full lifecycle: developing scope and technical sections of proposals and procurement documents, participating in contract negotiations, and overseeing delivery of the project plan to successfully achieve HNTB’s 4‑for‑4 performance—quality work delivered on time, on budget, and to client satisfaction.
The position proactively manages budget, schedule, technical requirements, contractual obligations, and client communications to support the project’s objectives. It also provides high‑level technical tasks while managing and reviewing design‑related specifications, calculations, reports, and plans. Coordination with internal and external partners—including cross‑discipline and functional teams—is essential to address and problem‑solve design‑related issues or concerns.
What You’ll Do- Develop project scope, fee quotation, and assist in preparing technical proposals and contracts in accordance with HNTB’s Sophisticated Contracting Approach (SCA).
- Serve as the primary client liaison; manage the project team to deliver scope, schedule, and budgets to completion and client satisfaction. Assist with client project scoping and contract negotiations.
- Perform technical discipline tasks—analysis, reports, design, specification, and production—for assigned projects.
- Implement the firm’s project delivery plan using HNTB’s Sophisticated Delivery Approach (SDA); lead development and execution of the project management plan; supervise and mentor the team toward overall project objectives.
- Coordinate with managers on project staffing—recruitment, development, retention, and succession—including development of staff reporting plans and support for performance and compensation reviews.
- Partner with Client Service Leaders and pursuit champions to assist with business development, client relationship building, and pursuit efforts for strategic and mini‑mega projects, in accordance with HNTB’s Sophisticated Sales Approach (SSA). Prepare proposal and presentation materials and lead interviews for such projects.
- Possibly recruit, hire, develop, and retain staff, including planning for reporting, performance, compensation reviews, and succession.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
- Bachelor’s degree in Engineering and 8 years of relevant experience.
- 2 years of task management or Deputy PM experience.
- Experience delivering projects on‑time, on‑budget, with quality and client satisfaction—identifying and escalating risk and change‑management issues.
- Leadership of a team for a smaller project or task order with few or no subconsultants.
- Proficiency using system tools to manage, monitor, and deliver projects or task orders.
- Collaboration with the Office Management Team to implement HNTB Sophisticated processes where applicable.
- Interface with your client‑level peer on a smaller project or task order.
- Provision of technical guidance to team and task leads, and participation in portions of the technical work.
- Master’s degree in Engineering.
- 10 years of relevant experience.
- Professional Engineer (PE) certification.
