Scientist, Nucleic Acid Physical Chemist / DNA Nanotechnology

Atlas Data Storage is revolutionizing the field of information technology by innovating DNA Data Storage solutions. At Atlas, we are developing a massively parallel, high-throughput, semiconductor-based information storage technology by leveraging the unique properties of synthetic DNA. Working at Atlas means being part of something bigger than yourself, where every person in every role has the opportunity to make a difference.

We are looking for highly self‑motivated and innovative candidates to join our team and help us build the future of data storage.

About the Role

This is a unique opportunity to join a talented team of scientists and engineers focused on solving one of the most critical challenges in DNA data storage: accurately, efficiently and cost effectively reading the information back.

Responsibilities
  • Design, synthesize and characterize DNA nanostructure (origami, macromolecular structure), devices and systems for measuring single molecule events.
  • Develop and perform complex workflows that integrate bottoms‑up self‑assembly approaches to molecular placement with top‑down fabrication microelectronic devices.
  • Designs and performs experiments that contribute to core group/research goals and reflect expert knowledge in the area of DNA nanotechnology.
  • Design, develop, and execute binding and activity assays in multiple formats.
  • Perform experiments that integrate DNA nanotechnology with microelectronic circuits.
  • Apply scientific and bioanalytical knowledge for developing methods for novel approaches to next generation DNA reading technologies.
  • Present experimental plans, results, conclusions and next steps at group meetings, project team meetings and company‑wide meetings.
  • Assist in the design and implementation of experimental protocols performed by laboratory associates.
  • Develop and build novel test stands for the purpose of monitoring biochemical processes.
  • Prepare timely technical reports summarizing experimental results and present to direct supervisor.
  • Collaborate with the chemistry, protein engineering and engineering teams developing novel sequencing technologies for DNA data storage applications.
Qualifications
  • Expertise in the technologies associated with sequencing DNA, RNA and/or proteins; specifically electrical methods such as nanopore based sequencing.
  • Experience in design, synthesis, amplification, purification, and characterization of DNA.
  • Knowledge of DNA nanotechnology, nanofabrication, assay development, enzyme characterization, kinetics, and protein biochemistry.
  • Working knowledge of a broad range of metrology tools, with deep experience using a suite of microscopy tools.
  • Background in all aspects of DNA sequencing technology development.
  • Experience with surface chemistry.
  • Experienced with nucleic acids workflows (purification, amplification, quantification of concentration, sequencing, data analysis, binding assays, etc.).
  • Experience integrating bioassays into microfluidic devices would be a major plus.
  • Knowledge of protein characterization methods preferred: SDS‑PAGE, western blotting, Protein quantification, chromatography, fluorescence plate readers.
  • Demonstrated ability to troubleshoot, optimize and solve challenging research problems.
  • Must be a creative, passionate, detail‑oriented person with excellent analytical, verbal and written communications skills (Word, Power point, and Excel).
  • Experience in several of the following areas preferred:
Assay Development, Product development, Design of Experiment (DOE), surface chemistry, and analysis techniques.
  • Desire and ability to work in a small interdisciplinary team to develop new technologies at a rapid pace.
  • Excellent troubleshooting skills as well as strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Demonstrated excellence in project planning, troubleshooting, and collaboration.
Education

Qualified candidates will have an advanced degree (PhD) in Physical Chemistry, Biophysics, Biochemistry, Physics or closely related field preferred. Experienced BS/MS candidates also welcome.

Physical Demands
  • Work will be performed onsite in office and laboratory space located in South San…
