Help people build the life they want – right where they live

Do you believe that everyone has strengths, gifts and potential?

Are you passionate about helping people feel connected, valued and part of their community?

Could you walk alongside people, not to "fix" their problems, but to support them in achieving what matters most to them?

If so, we'd love to hear from you.

At South Tyneside Council, we're committed to creating a borough where people live healthy, happy and fulfilling lives, supported by strong, welcoming communities. We believe the best solutions are often found not in services, but in the strengths of local people, neighbourhoods and relationships.

As a Local Area Coordinator in Primrose Ward
, you will be at the heart of your community, helping people discover opportunities, build connections and create positive change in their own lives.

About the Role:

This is not a desk-based role. Most of your time will be spent out in the community, building genuine relationships with local people, families, groups and organisations.

There are no lengthy assessments, no referrals and no time limits. Instead, you'll be a trusted, accessible presence in the neighbourhood‑someone people can turn to when they need support, information, encouragement or simply someone to listen.

You'll walk alongside people facing a wide range of life challenges, helping them identify their strengths, explore possibilities, make informed choices and achieve their goals. Whether someone is experiencing isolation, navigating difficult and complex life situations or looking to become more involved in their community, you'll help them find solutions that are meaningful, sustainable and often based on community resources rather than services.

What

you'll be doing
  • Building trusted, long‑term relationships with local people and families.
  • Supporting people to identify their strengths, aspirations and possibilities for the future.
  • Helping individuals and families develop and achieve their own plans for a good life.
  • Connecting people with local opportunities, networks, groups and resources.
  • Providing personalised information, advice and short‑term support.
  • Developing strong partnerships with residents, community groups, voluntary organisations and services.
  • Strengthening community capacity and encouraging greater collaboration across neighbourhoods.
  • Gathering stories, insights and learning that help influence wider health and social care systems and demonstrate the impact of Local Area Coordination.
About You

You'll be a natural relationship‑builder with exceptional listening and communication skills.

Most importantly, you'll share our belief that people are experts in their own lives. Rather than doing things to people or trying to fix their problems, you'll work alongside them as a trusted partner, supporting them to achieve their own goals and aspirations.

You’ll bring:
  • Experience of supporting people and families from diverse backgrounds.
  • A person‑centred, relational, strengths‑based and holistic approach.
  • The ability to build trust and develop meaningful relationships.
  • Confidence working independently in community settings.
  • A genuine passion for inclusion, social justice and community development.
  • The ability to see possibilities where others might see barriers.
  • Commitment to helping people build the life they want, on their own terms.
Why this role matters

Local Area Coordination is about unlocking potential, strengthening communities and creating lasting change. Every day, you'll have the opportunity to help people find hope, build confidence, develop connections and take steps towards a better future.

If you're looking for a role where relationships matter, communities come first and every day brings the chance to make a real difference, we'd love to hear from you.

Join us in Primrose and help create a community where everyone can thrive.

We remain fully committed to supporting our staff to grow and develop, and we will provide you with the opportunity to use your skills and learn new ones.
