Mechatronic Project Lead (Mining Systems)

Job Summary

The Mechatronic Project Lead manages capital and operational projects related to automated machinery, material-handling systems, and electronic control systems. This role is responsible for the design, implementation, and maintenance of technologies that improve safety, efficiency, and reliability, including PLC systems, autonomous vehicles, and remote-controlled machinery.

• Project Leadership: Act as the single point of accountability for assigned projects, from conceptual design and feasibility studies to commissioning, and final handover.
• Systems Design & Modification: Design and modify complex mechanical and mechatronic components, including conveyors, crushers, processing plants, and mobile machinery.
• Automation & Integration: Lead the implementation of PLC software, CAN bus systems (J1939, CANO
  
  pen), sensor integration, and autonomous vehicle technologies.
• Operational Optimization: Identify and execute continuous improvement initiatives to enhance equipment reliability, increase uptime, and reduce maintenance costs, utilizing data-driven insights (IoT, predictive analytics).
• Failure Analysis & Troubleshooting: Lead root cause investigations for complex electro-mechanical failures and develop long-term solutions.
• Compliance & Safety: Ensure all designs and installations comply with Mine Health and Safety Act regulations, and enforce strict safety standards, such as HAZOP studies.
• Stakeholder & Contractor Management: Collaborate with cross-functional teams (production, electrical, automation) and manage vendors/contractors, providing technical guidance to ensure project milestones are met.

• Education: Bachelor’s degree in Mechatronics, Mechanical, Electrical, or Control Engineering.
• Experience: A minimum of 8–10+ years of experience in heavy industry or mining, with a strong background in managing major capital projects.
• Technical Knowledge:
• Proficiency in CAD software (Solid Works, Inventor, AutoCAD).
• Advanced knowledge of PLC programming and industrial automation software.
• Deep understanding of hydraulics, pneumatics, and rotating equipment.
• Experience with IoT sensors, data analytics, and autonomous systems.

  Strong analytical, problem-solving, and project management skills (MS Project, ROI, NPV).
• Certifications: Government Certificate of Competency (GCC) for Mines and Works is often highly preferred in certain regions (e.g., South Africa).

• Ability to work in demanding on-site, remote, or underground mining environments.
• Frequent travel to operational sites for installation, testing, and commissioning.
• Adherence to FIFO (Fly-In, Fly-Out) or DIDO (Drive-In, Drive-Out) rosters may be required.

As mining operations face extreme conditions and strive for higher efficiency, the need for intelligent, automated, and self-monitoring systems grows. This role directly impacts the bottom line by using technology to extend equipment life and increase production.
