Job Summary

Eskom Holdings SOC Ltd, South Africas leading energy provider, is seeking a Senior Advisor Nuclear Safety to join the team at Koeberg Power Station. The role is critical in ensuring the highest standards of nuclear safety are maintained in compliance with national and international regulatory frameworks. The successful candidate will provide expert guidance on nuclear safety policies, risk management, and operational protocols, supporting Koebergs mission of delivering safe, reliable, and sustainable electricity.

This is a strategic role requiring deep technical expertise, regulatory knowledge, and the ability to influence and drive safety culture across multidisciplinary teams.

Key Responsibilities
  • Provide technical leadership and advisory support on all nuclear safety-related matters.

  • Conduct risk assessments, safety analyses, and audits to ensure compliance with Eskom policies and the National Nuclear Regulator (NNR) requirements.

  • Develop, review, and implement safety standards, procedures, and emergency preparedness protocols.

  • Collaborate with engineering, operations, and regulatory teams to ensure safe and efficient plant operations.

  • Lead investigations of safety incidents, identifying root causes and recommending corrective actions.

  • Monitor and report on nuclear safety performance metrics and regulatory compliance.

  • Provide technical guidance and training to staff on nuclear safety principles and best practices.

  • Stay abreast of industry developments, international standards, and technological advancements in nuclear safety.

Required

Skills and Qualifications
  • Bachelors degree in Nuclear Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related technical field; a Masters degree is an advantage.

  • Professional registration or certification in nuclear engineering or safety disciplines is highly desirable.

  • In-depth knowledge of nuclear safety regulations, standards, and international best practices (e.g., IAEA, NNR).

  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making skills.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to convey complex technical concepts clearly.

  • Leadership and stakeholder management skills to influence cross-functional teams.

Experience
  • Minimum of 8–10 years of experience in nuclear safety or related technical advisory roles within a power generation environment.

  • Proven experience in risk assessments, safety audits, and regulatory compliance in nuclear operations.

  • Experience leading technical teams and managing safety-critical projects.

Working Hours
  • Full-time position, typically aligned with Koeberg Power Station operational schedules.

  • May require occasional overtime, shift work, or emergency response duties depending on operational requirements.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Strong understanding of nuclear power plant systems and operational safety requirements.

  • Knowledge of regulatory frameworks governing nuclear energy in South Africa and internationally.

  • Ability to develop, implement, and monitor nuclear safety programs effectively.

  • High attention to detail, analytical mindset, and proactive approach to problem-solving.

  • Strong interpersonal skills to collaborate with internal teams, regulators, and external stakeholders.
