Location: Durbanville

The Mechanical Engineer is a mid-level role for mechanical engineering personnel at Global Riser. He/she will be an enthusiastic, efficient, committed individual with a strong background in engineering theory, design, project management, manufacturing, and practical work experience, who can think practically and innovatively. The employee will interact with Customers, Suppliers, Field Service Engineers, Technicians, Management and Consultants. The employee will give guidance and expert advice to others in the department.

The employee will also be expected to work unsupervised and will be required to supervise other GR personnel.

Responsibilities, include but not limited to:
  • Oversee multiple projects, including your own and provide guidance.
  • Mentor junior mechanical engineers and technicians.
  • Gain a fundamental understanding of the design, operation, inspection and repair of Capital Drilling Equipment as well as all the processes, procedures, etc. of the Company.
  • Conduct in-house design and development, which will be the primary function of the role, including strength calculations (from first principles) and FEA/Simulation, 3D CAD modelling and drawing using Solid Works, manufacturing data pack generation (incl. BOM’s, QCP’s, Works Instructions, Manuals);
  • Manage design and development Projects, which will be the secondary function within the role from inception through to delivery, ensuring adherence to company policies and procedures.
  • Giving expert technical advice to Technicians and coaching new Technicians.
  • Monitor compliance to applicable codes, practices, QC policies, procedures, and specifications.
  • Detailed reporting and inspection report reviews; regular report and feedback to Management and the Customer on the progress of project.
  • Review engineering deliverables and initiate appropriate corrective actions; draft new procedures as required.
  • Ensure safe work practices are being adhered to at all times.
Skills:
  • An advanced knowledge of the MS Office suite (especially Word, Excel, Teams).
  • Excellent written communicator (email, technical report writing, Whats App etc.).
  • Excellent level of English, both written and verbal.
  • Sound understanding of 3D CAD packages, in particular Solid Works would be advantageous.
  • Sound understanding of FEA Software, in particular Solid Works Simulation and/or Abaqus would be advantageous.
  • Sound understanding of Engineering Calculations Software, in particular Mathcad, MATLAB or similar would be advantageous.
  • Exposure to ASME VIII, API and Class Rules (ABS & DNV) in respect of design and manufacture would be advantageous.
  • Sound understanding of fabrication, boiler making/welding, precision machining.
Qualifications:

Bachelor of Science (BSc Eng) or Bachelor of Engineering (BEng) in Mechanical Engineering (minimum requirement)

Experience

Three to six years’ experience in a relatable engineering environment.
