REPORTING TO: FAS SUPERINTENDEN T
PURPOSE: To ensure fully operational vessels operating safely and effectively in accordance with SAMSA and other related Maritime Regulations and company policies.
KEY PERFORMANCE AREAS REPAIRS AND MAINTENANCE- Ensure that the vessel is mechanically able to remain at sea for the full voyage without unnecessarily returning to port for repairs.
- Ensure that preventative maintenance procedures are in place for all equipment and that repairs are carried out satisfactorily.
- Inform the Skipper and Superintendent timeously of any changes in performance which may require immediate action to be taken at sea or which may require investigation by shore-based engineering staff.
- Ensure that the correct spare parts are available in the correct amount to maintain efficiency during sailing.
- Ensure that all machinery functions effectively during sailing and trawling.
- Ensure that the hold temperatures are always maintained at the specified temperatures.
- Ensure that the recognized watch keeping practices are adhered to.
- Ensure that correct grades of fuel and lubrication oils are loaded.
- Ensure that the vessels Engineering stores requirements for every trip are adequate, considering the vessel’s operating parameters & length of voyage.
- Ensure that all documentation for every voyage as per SAMSA & Company requirements is in order and handed over to the relevant manager.
- Ensure that the engine room staff are informed of operating procedures regarding operation and maintenance of equipment.
- Ensure the planned maintenance system is updated.
- Take full responsibility for the safety of the engine room staff and machinery.
- Ensure that all subordinates are familiar with emergency procedures and that emergency safety procedures and good housekeeping practices are complied with and followed in the engine room.
- Ensure that operation of machinery does not infringe on any International, South African or Company regulations regarding protection of Marine Environment.
- Represent the vessel’s Engineering Department when safety surveys are carried out by demonstrating the operations conditions of engine room equipment.
- Represent the vessel’s Engineering Department during enquiries & investigations held by Sea Harvest, SAMSA, NOSA, Portnet etc.
- Develop the skills and confidence of officers by providing on board training and explaining the relevant content of the following to all personnel.
- Undertake discipline at sea of engine room staff in terms of Company Policy & Merchant Shipping Act always adhering to approved disciplinary procedures.
- Deal with subordinate grievances in accordance with the Grievance procedure.
- Assess subordinates and engineering cadets on an ongoing basis.
- Valid Certificate of Competency as Chief Engineer (>2000KW Fishing)
- Valid SAMSA Medical Certificate (unrestricted)
- Valid STCW documentation
- At least 3 years' experience as Second Engineer (unlimited)
- Previous experience as Chief Engineer (unlimited) would be advantageous.
- Technical and problem-solving skills.
- Personnel management and safety awareness.
- Technical Report Writing.
- Fluent in the English language, both spoken and written.
- Able to follow company instructions and procedures.
