VOHE Officer

Join us as a VOHE Officer in our Zibulo operation and ensure health and safety of the team. Ensure all policies and procedures are adhered to while extracting coal to meet our production targets.

Thungela Resources is a leading South African thermal coal business focused exclusively on thermal coal production. It is one of the largest pure‑play producers and exporters of thermal coal in South Africa based on aggregate coal reserves and marketable coal production. Thungela focuses on exporting its thermal coal portfolio mainly to the Indian, Asian, Southeast Asian, Middle East and North African markets.

• Assist with ensuring that legal requirements, group standards and policies are adhered to.
• Ensure adherence to legal and corporate standards through monitoring and reporting.
• Maintain VOHE strategies and systems; measure compliance to Sections 11 and 12 of the Mine Health and Safety Act.
• Prepare, sample and report compliance to the Environmental Engineering and Occupational Hygiene Regulations of the Mine Health and Safety Act.
• Monitor airborne pollutants, air temperature, ventilation, noise, illumination and water.
• Analyse the requirements of the Act and Regulations and keep a document describing occupational hygiene practice at the mine, ensuring that all reasonably practicable means or control of occupational hygiene exposure are properly administered.
• Conduct daily VOHE inspections and record findings, providing information and advice on VOHE matters related to specific areas and sections, and advise on changes to plans, schedules, procedures and standards.
• Manage resources and assets.
• Assist in VOHE planning.

• Intermediate certificate as offered by the Mineral Council.
• Advanced Certificate in Mine Environmental Control.

• Relevant experience in a mining environment.
• Must have a good safety record.
• Knowledge and understanding of the Mine Health and Safety Act.
• Knowledge of the relevant Occupational Health legislation. Additional Information
  • Experience in an underground coal mine.
  • Computer literate (Micro Station/ VENT SIM).
  • Experience in a VOHE department and underground colliery mine.
  • Code 8 driver's licence.
  • Have sound knowledge of safety systems and standards and high regard for safety, regulations and standards.
