, we are looking for a Mechanical Design Engineer to join our growing team in Somerset West.
As a Mechanical Design Engineer, you will be part of an international Product Development Team working on advanced industrial propulsion and motion systems. You will take ownership of mechanical design tasks and develop parts, assemblies, and system layouts from concept through to manufacturing-ready solutions.
What will you be doing?- Designing and developing mechanical components, assemblies, and system layouts from concept to production
- Creating 3D models, technical drawings, engineering calculations, and analyses
- Ensuring designs meet relevant technical specifications, standards, and certification requirements
- Working with multidisciplinary and international engineering teams to solve technical challenges and integrate designs into larger systems
- Performing feasibility studies and validating design decisions through calculations and simulations
- Improving and optimizing existing products and mechanical designs
- Preparing and presenting technical documentation and design findings
- Contributing to engineering processes, guidelines, and best practices
You will be joining R² Engineering Services
, a fast-growing engineering company based in Somerset West, South Africa.
We provide design and engineering solutions for international clients, particularly within the machine design and industrial engineering sectors. You will collaborate with engineers and technical specialists across different international development teams while working on complex, real-world engineering applications.
The role offers exposure to both new product development and the continuous improvement of existing products, with opportunities to develop your technical expertise and potentially travel to the Netherlands.
What are we looking for?You don't need to tick every single box, but a strong mechanical design and product development background is important for this role.
Ideally, you have:
- A bachelor’s or master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Marine Engineering, or a closely related field
- 3+ years of experience in mechanical design and/or product development
- Experience designing complex mechanical systems and assemblies
- Experience taking designs from concept through detailed design, manufacturing, testing, and implementation
- Proficiency in 3D CAD software;
Siemens NX is preferred, but Solid Works, Inventor, Creo, CATIA, or similar tools are also suitable - Experience creating technical drawings and a good understanding of GD&T, materials, manufacturing processes, and production methods
- Familiarity with Design for Manufacturing and Assembly (DFMA)
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
- The ability to work effectively in multidisciplinary and international engineering teams
- A proactive attitude and eagerness to develop your technical skills
- Experience with rotating equipment, gearboxes, drive trains, propulsion systems, maritime applications, or other heavy-industrial systems is highly advantageous
- A valid South African work permit or existing right to work in South Africa
