Projects Engineer (Mechanical) | Kenmore | East Rand, with time on site across Africa
Kenmore supplies the mining industry across Africa. We design and build complete crushing, milling and screening plants as turnkey projects, supply capital equipment, spares and wear parts to mines across the continent.
We are looking for a mechanical engineer to join our Projects team and help deliver plants from contract to commissioning. You will work with the Projects Director and our project managers on site and in the office: checking designs against what the site needs, managing suppliers and fabricators and planning installation. We are a small company and we work across lines: when Technical needs a hand, you will give it, and they will do the same for you.
You have a BEng or BTech in mechanical engineering and three to eight years in heavy industry, ideally on plant or equipment projects. You are comfortable on a mine site, can read and challenge a drawing, and would rather solve a problem in the field than write about it.
Package is market-related. We read every application and reply to all of them.
Full job descriptionReports to:
Projects Director
Location:
East Rand, Gauteng, with regular time on mine sites in South Africa and across Africa
Kenmore supplies the mining industry across Africa. We design and build complete crushing, milling and screening plants as turnkey projects, supply capital equipment, spares and wear parts to mines across the continent.
The roleThe Projects Engineer is the engineering hand on our turnkey projects: the person who takes a plant from awarded contract through detailed engineering, procurement, fabrication, installation and commissioning, working alongside the project manager and under the Projects Director. The role sits in the Projects division and draws on our Technical team for design, so you will work closely with the drawing office while owning the engineering on your project.
One thing to know about Kenmore: we are small and nimble, and there are no walls between departments. Most of the time you will be on project work, but when the Technical team needs an engineer for a few days, or a site problem needs more hands, you will step in, and they will do the same when a project is under pressure.
We want people who like working that way.
- Review designs, drawings and specifications for your project against the contract, the site and the process, and resolve queries with the drawing office and the client.
- Prepare and check technical scopes for suppliers and fabricators; evaluate offers technically; inspect and expedite equipment and steelwork through manufacture.
- Plan installation with the project manager: sequencing, lifting, access and method statements; supervise and support site teams and contractors during erection.
- Lead or support mechanical commissioning, cold and hot, and the handover to the client, including punch lists … and close‑out… …… …The … ……. etc…
- Keep technical records in order: drawing registers, change control, data books, as-builts and operating and maintenance manuals.
- Support project costing and claims with accurate technical input, and flag scope changes early.
- Work safely and hold others to it: site inductions, risk assessments, permits, and the client's safety system.
- BEng, BSc(Eng) or BTech in mechanical engineering. Progress toward ECSA registration is an advantage.
- Three to eight years in heavy industry, ideally on plant, equipment or materials-handling projects in mining or minerals processing. Comminution experience is an advantage.
- Comfortable on site: you have stood on a plant during installation or commissioning and know what it takes to get it running.
- Able to read, check and challenge fabrication and GA drawings, and to specify equipment clearly to a supplier.
- Organised with records and paperwork, because on a project the drawing register matters as much as the drawing.
- Practical, calm under pressure, and willing to travel: some of our work is a long way from the office.
- Happy to work across departments in a small company: the job is the job that needs doing that week.
- Comminution (crushing, milling and screening) experience is an advantage, not a requirement.
Market-related, negotiable on experience.
