Head Of Data and Analytics

PURPOSE OF THE JOB

The Head of Data and Analytics owns the data vision, strategy and delivery roadmap for the South African business, and is accountable for turning the company’s data assets into measurable business value for the organisation and its customers. The role takes custodianship of the company’s data warehouse, the AWS-based platform intended to serve as the single source of truth and leads its build-out from a consolidated, governed reporting platform through to advanced analytics.

Data and analytics focuses on turning data into insight, consolidating and combining information across source systems, building reports, forecasts and models, and producing the analyses that inform commercial, operational and strategic decisions. This is distinct from IT and software engineering, which builds and operates the production systems the business runs on. The relationship is one of producer and consumer: operational systems generate data as a byproduct of their operation, while the data and analytics function consumes, integrates and combines that data to create insight no individual source system can provide.

The Head of Data and Analytics leads the former, working alongside, not in place of the IT function that builds and maintains the underlying platforms

A defining feature of this role is that a substantial portion of operational data will increasingly reside in systems managed by the group head office in Italy. The successful candidate must therefore work in close partnership with Italian head office to secure timely, good-quality access to the data required for reporting and analytics and will at times implement and operate tools mandated or provided by head office.

• Define, own and execute the data and analytics strategy for the South African business, in direct alignment with commercial and operational priorities.
• Own the portfolio of data products to be built and the delivery roadmap the team rolls out, prioritising work according to business value and demand.
• Translate operational, commercial, financial and customer data into actionable insight and measurable value — improving decision-making, supporting revenue growth and driving efficiency

• Take over custodianship of the AWS data warehouse, including the technical-architecture, ensuring scalability, performance, cost-efficiency, security and resilient integration with source systems.
• Own the data architecture roadmap and platform development.
• Establish and protect a consolidated analytical data layer that enables analysis no individual source system can provide.

• Sustain and strengthen the data-quality policies and processes that are the existing team’s underlying strength — master data management, data capture standards and data custodianship.
• Establish and enforce data governance, master data management, and data lineage frameworks across the analytical platform.
• Ensure that personal and customer data processed within the data and analytics platform meets POPIA and other applicable regulatory requirements.

• Lead and develop the analytics capability — directing descriptive analytics (dashboards and reporting via the BI team and partners) and building out predictive and prescriptive analytics.
• Deliver reporting, forecasting and advanced analytics that support strategic, commercial and operational goals, including customer-facing data products.
• Product ionise advanced analytics and, where appropriate, AI use cases — recognising that this will require close partnership with head office given the data environment.
