Location: Hout Bay

The Maintenance Assistant is responsible for supporting the maintenance team in ensuring that all hotel, lodge, or resort facilities, equipment, and infrastructure are maintained to the highest standards. This role assists with preventative maintenance, repairs, inspections, and general upkeep to provide a safe, functional, and welcoming environment for guests and staff while minimising operational downtime.
Key Responsibilities
  • Assist with preventative maintenance programmes for buildings, guest rooms, public areas, and staff facilities.
  • Carry out general repairs, including basic plumbing, electrical, carpentry, painting, and masonry work.
  • Perform routine inspections of facilities and report maintenance issues promptly.
  • Respond to maintenance requests from departments in a timely and professional manner.
  • Assist with repairing and maintaining HVAC systems, lighting, water systems, and general equipment where applicable.
  • Conduct daily checks of generators, pumps, boilers, water treatment systems, and other operational equipment.
  • Ensure guest rooms and public areas are maintained to the highest presentation and safety standards.
  • Maintain swimming pools, gardens, pathways, and outdoor facilities where required.
  • Assist with the setup and maintenance of conference rooms, events, and special functions.
  • Ensure tools, equipment, and maintenance workshops are clean, organised, and secure.
  • Monitor stock levels of maintenance supplies and report shortages.
  • Assist contractors and service providers during maintenance projects and scheduled servicing.
  • Follow health, safety, environmental, and fire regulations at all times.
  • Complete maintenance records, job cards, and inspection reports accurately.
  • Support emergency maintenance repairs and be available for after-hours call-outs when required.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Grade 12 (Matric) or equivalent.
  • Trade certificate or vocational qualification in Electrical, Plumbing, Carpentry, Mechanical, or Building Maintenance (advantageous).
  • Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) training is advantageous.
  • Valid South African driver's licence (preferred).
Experience Required
  • Minimum of 2–3 years' experience in a maintenance role within a hotel, lodge, resort, or hospitality environment.
  • Experience performing general building maintenance and repairs.
  • Knowledge of preventative maintenance practices.
  • Experience using hand and power tools safely.
Knowledge & Skills
  • Basic knowledge of plumbing, electrical, carpentry, painting, and general building maintenance.
  • Understanding of preventative maintenance systems.
  • Ability to identify maintenance faults and recommend solutions.
  • Basic knowledge of HVAC, generators, water systems, and pumps is advantageous.
  • Good problem-solving and troubleshooting skills.
  • Ability to prioritise maintenance tasks effectively.
  • Strong organisational and time management skills.
  • Good communication and teamwork abilities.
  • Basic computer literacy for completing maintenance reports.

  • Eligible to work in South Africa.
Preferred Competencies
  • Previous experience in a luxury lodge, hotel, or resort.
  • Knowledge of electrical fault finding and basic plumbing repairs.
  • Experience with generators, solar systems, water treatment plants, or irrigation systems.
  • Understanding of health, safety, and environmental regulations.
  • Ability to assist with landscaping and grounds maintenance.
  • Strong commitment to maintaining high hospitality standards and ensuring an exceptional guest experience.
