Mine Manager Coal Mining - Limpopo

Introduction

A leading international mining company is seeking an experienced and highly competent Mine Manager to oversee its open-pit coal mining operations in Makhado, Limpopo. This is a senior operational leadership role, responsible for driving safe, efficient and legally compliant coal production at one of the region’s flagship mining sites.

The Mine Manager will take full accountability for the management, leadership, and optimisation of mining operations. The successful candidate will oversee production, define mining methods, allocate equipment, manage crews, and ensure compliance with South African legislation, including the Mine Health and Safety Act (MHSA). This position plays a critical role in aligning operational outputs with strategic business objectives.

• Provide full oversight of mine operations, including production planning, safety, and legal compliance.
• Develop and implement operational plans, mining methods, and short-, medium-, and long-term production schedules.
• Lead and manage mining crews, contractor teams, and onsite support functions.
• Ensure strict adherence to MHSA, environmental regulations, and statutory reporting requirements.
• Establish and maintain risk management protocols, safety systems, and emergency preparedness plans.
• Monitor and report on KPIs, production targets, cost effectiveness, and operational performance.
• Collaborate closely with geology, processing, engineering, maintenance, logistics, and support departments.
• Provide technical, operational, and legal insights to senior management and the board.
• Lead internal and external audits, inspections, statutory engagements, and regulatory interactions.

• Bachelor’s degree in Mining Engineering or a related discipline.
• Valid Mine Manager’s Certificate of Competency (MMCC) – essential.
• Minimum 10 years of mining operations experience, with at least 5 years in a managerial role.
• Proven experience in coal mining operations – thermal and / or metallurgical coal.
• Strong leadership background in managing mining crews and contractor teams.
• Solid understanding of MHSA compliance, South African mining regulations, and safety legislation.
• Open-pit mining experience preferred; underground experience advantageous.
