Boksburg, Gauteng
Job Description A well-established precision engineering and manufacturing company based in Boksburg is seeking a skilled CNC / EDM Machinist – Milling, Turning & Wire Cutting to join its production team. The successful candidate will be responsible for the setup, programming, operation, and maintenance of CNC milling, CNC turning, wire EDM, and sinker EDM machines to manufacture high-precision components, tooling, moulds, dies, jigs, and fixtures to exact customer specifications.
Key Responsibilities
- Set up, program, and operate CNC milling, CNC turning, wire EDM, and sinker EDM machines.
- Manufacture precision-engineered components in accordance with engineering drawings and customer specifications.
- Read and interpret technical drawings, CAD drawings, and machining instructions.
- Select appropriate tooling, fixtures, electrodes, cutting parameters, and machine settings.
- Perform machine setups, tool changes, work offsets, and program adjustments.
- Conduct first-off inspections and in-process quality checks to ensure components meet specified tolerances.
- Measure finished components using precision measuring equipment, including verniers, micrometers, bore gauges, dial indicators, and height gauges.
- Produce complex profiles and precision components using wire EDM and spark erosion processes.
- Troubleshoot machining issues and implement corrective actions to minimise downtime.
- Perform routine preventative maintenance on CNC and EDM machinery.
- Collaborate with engineering and production teams to improve manufacturing processes and production efficiency.
- Ensure compliance with quality standards, production schedules, and workplace safety requirements.
- Maintain accurate production records and ensure good housekeeping within the workshop.
- Trade qualification as a Toolmaker, Machinist, Fitter & Turner, or equivalent (advantageous).
- Minimum of 3–5 years' experience operating CNC milling, CNC turning, Wire EDM, and/or Sinker EDM machines within a precision engineering or tooling environment.
- Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings and geometric tolerances (GD&T).
- Experience machining various materials, including hardened steel, stainless steel, aluminium, and engineering plastics.
- Proficient in the use of precision measuring instruments.
- Experience with CNC programming and CAD/CAM software will be advantageous.
- Valid driver's licence is advantageous.
- Strong CNC machining and EDM machining knowledge.
- Excellent attention to detail and commitment to producing high-quality work.
- Strong mechanical aptitude and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Good organisational and time management skills.
- Ability to work under pressure and meet production deadlines.
- Strong understanding of quality control procedures and continuous improvement principles.
- Commitment to maintaining a safe and organised work environment.
