Our client, a well-established precision engineering company based in the Strand / Helderberg area
, is looking for an experienced Conventional Turner to join their workshop team.
This role is ideal for a skilled, hands-on machinist who is confident operating conventional lathes independently and manufacturing precision components from engineering drawings.
The successful candidate must take pride in producing accurate, high-quality work and be comfortable working in a precision engineering environment where attention to detail, reliability and workmanship are essential.
Minimum Requirements- Proven experience as a Conventional Turner / Manual Turner / Machinist
. - Strong hands-on experience operating conventional lathes.
- Ability to set up and complete jobs independently.
- Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings.
- Tolerances and fits
- Cutting tools
- Feeds and speeds
- Threading
- Different materials and machining characteristics
- Experience using precision measuring instruments.
- Ability to work to close tolerances.
- Previous experience in a precision engineering environment is highly advantageous.
- CNC turning experience would be advantageous but is not essential.
- A recognised Trade Test / Red Seal would be advantageous
- Set up and operate conventional lathes independently.
- Manufacture components according to engineering drawings and specifications.
- Facing
- Boring
- Thread cutting
- Taper turning
- Drilling
- Parting
- Grooving
Select appropriate cutting tools and machining methods.
Determine suitable feeds and speeds.
Set up work pieces accurately before machining.
Machine components to specified tolerances and dimensions.
Measure and inspect components during and after machining.
Use precision measuring equipment such as:- Verniers
- Micrometers
- Bore gauges
- Dial indicators
- Thread gauges
- Identify and correct machining problems.
- Carry out repairs, modifications and rework where required.
- Maintain machinery, tooling and the general work area.
- Ensure high standards of workmanship and quality.
- Follow company health and safety procedures.
