Professional Nurse/Clinical Nurse - ICU Cardiac Care

The professional nurse/clinical nurse is a qualified practitioner with a post‑basic qualification, responsible for the assessment, planning and implementation of individualised, holistic and person‑centred nursing care for patients, families and community members. The role includes coordination of patient care within a multi‑disciplinary health team and the application of scientifically based nursing theories and processes to treat patients as physical, social and spiritual individuals.

Work Output and Accountabilities Consistency of Care
  • Serve as a clinical resource supporting personnel in assessing, planning, implementing, evaluating and documenting nursing care within the unit.
  • Communicate with families and health professionals to advocate for optimal patient care.
  • Act as a liaison between nursing management and the unit to eliminate patient care problems or issues.
  • Assess, plan and implement advanced nursing care in a specialised field, following standard procedures, SOPs, nursing theory and medical direction.
  • Initiate, direct and maintain emergency treatment (resus) whenever indicated, diagnosing and treating emergency patients quickly and efficiently within the scope of practice.
  • Interview patients and families to obtain relevant baseline information, evaluate behaviour and assess immediate and long‑term needs.
  • Participate as a professional member of the multi‑disciplinary team in developing and implementing health care plans and treatment regimes.
  • Conduct rounds with physicians and medical practitioners to review patient conditions, develop nursing care plans and participate in patient care within the unit.
  • Evaluate patient care needs, initiate individualised nursing care plans and coordinate patient services.
  • Prepare day‑and‑night shift documentation reflecting patient status, staff ratios and identified problems.
  • Maintain communication with the unit manager regarding activities and problems.
  • Perform related tasks as requested by nursing leadership.
  • Contribute to the formulation of patient care policy and procedures within the hospital.
  • Ensure a safe, clean and secure environment for patients, staff and visitors.
  • Optimise and maintain quality, effective and safe nursing care within the assigned budget.
  • Monitor safe utilisation of supplies and equipment, and set standards for their usage.

  • Coordinate with the Clinical Facilitation Department and other multi‑disciplinary team members to meet ongoing educational needs of nursing staff and students.
  • Collaborate with Clinical Facilitators in planning, implementing, mentoring and evaluating learning experiences and opportunities for staff and students.
  • Provide ongoing review, practice and in‑service training of emergency procedures.
  • Participate in orientation and in‑service training of new staff in the unit.
  • Advise and inform staff on current and updated policies and procedures.
  • Allocate staff members to promote optimal use of staffing resources and specialised skills required for patient care.
  • Adjust staffing levels to meet acuity‑level needs.
  • Engage in personal professional development to maintain a satisfactory level of skill and knowledge.
  • Stay updated with the organization’s evolving policies and procedures.
  • Work effectively and cooperatively with others to establish and maintain mutually beneficial relationships.
  • Develop collaborative relationships to accomplish work goals.
  • Encourage effective communication and interaction within the unit, with the multi‑disciplinary team and the public.
  • Foster positive interpersonal and public relations while applying the philosophy, goals and procedures of the organization.
